Chanset and Sprocket for F650
 

Hi,
I am gonna change my chain and sprockets.
I have found one on ebay. The brand of the chain is Regina and the sprockets are Esjot. Any idea how good they are?

BMW drivers dont know so much about chains and sprockets.

Instead i have know something. On my bike ( Honda CBR 100 ) i have chains and sprockets vich are been there now 60 000km so qality is exellent.

If you want to bee shure buy D.I.D chains and J.T Sprockets.

My mechanic recommends a high quality chain and cheap sprockets. He says that way they wear out together and you just change the whole thing every time. I have found this to be true at least once with a Regina chain and Brand X sprockets, not sure what, actually.

However, the last time I installed a new set of chain and sprockets, I also installed a Scottoiler. I now have 8000 miles on this set and have adjusted the chain i/2 turn in that amount of time. I am currently in Mexico and I recommend this device wholeheartedly. The cost is about the same as a set of chain and sprockets and at this wear rate, I believe if you keep a bike long enough to buy one extra set you´ll break even. Any longer that they last is lagniappe.

Not sure if fitting cheap sprockets is a good idea on an F650, especially the older bikes with their more lumpy power output. I found that even top quality sprockets can get hooked very quickly. So maybe cheap ones would not last long at all.

Remember that a worn sprocket can cause the chain to wear out quickly.

I have change the original sprocket ratio of 16/47 for a 16/49 on my wifes F65O 1996.
Much better on low revs off road (lesser engine knocking) and still 135 km/h (85 mi/h) conti speed on motorway. Today this chain/sprockets combination has approx. 15.000 km and is still ok.

The original chain is not too good whilst the BMW sprockets are good quality. I get up to 35000 km out of the combination DID X-Ring chain and good quality sprockets on my bikes (currently DR650SE / KLR650 A and C, no more F650) with some 70% on gravel. The narrower 520 chain (KLR and F 650) wears a bit quicker than the wider 525 on the Suzuki. Good care is essential to make your chain last. Use top quality chain wax (like Castrol) and let the wax dry before you start off. I used to have some scottoilers and threw them all away. They do not bring any advantage for the lifetime of the chain compared to good care with spray but cause a terrible mess once out of adjustment (They ALWAYS cause a minor mess).
NEVER combine a new chain with old sprockets or vice versa. The new chain will not fit exactly into the worn sprockets and chain and sprockets will wear very quickly. Chain and sprockets always need to be replaced together to guarantee maximum lifetime.
For emergencies I use "combined harvester" roller chains which you can get at roller bearing and machinery supplies dealers (Bearing Man in every town in SA). Dirt cheap and readily available and got me home from northern KZN to Cape Town once.

I've bought DID 520VM chain and JT sprockets. Both brant new and done only a couple of miles. However, as soon as s I complite my tour i'll let you know how they were.

One thing to pay attention to is the types and quality of chains from the same supplier. DID makes a bunch of chains with different quality and cost. A chain that costs 3 times as much usally lasts a lot longer. Also the cheaper chains can fall apart and wear really quick. If you ride in lots of wet a chain oiler of some sort really works, for me it isn't possible to spray on chain lube often enough.

I use Castrol chain wax and give my customers the guideline to spray every 500 km or after one day with dirt roads or after one day with rain or river crossings. Works very well whilst scottoilers were a permanent mess. Must admit that we've got some kind of arid climate, no experience with dripping wet.
