Catalytic Converter - should I lose it?

Hi guys, sorry if this has been asked before - I'm a newbie!

I'm off to South America in December - top to bottom in 3 or 4 months....on a F650 Dakar.

Does everybody remove the catalytic convertor for this part of the world? If so, what's the best way (economicaly speaking!)

Clear tracks!
Greg

Hi,
We are heading to Asia next month on a F650GS and a Dakar. We have put Staintune exhausts on our bikes. Look at the F650.com website. They talk about doing things to the exhausts. My father in law tried to take it out of his Dakar but failed and has had a staintune put on. Have been told that the cat will not last long with leaded fuel but there are people riding around the world with them . Don't think this has been much, try F650.com

Hi Greg,
If you crap out your cat(BMW say it won't affectthe running of the engine) it costs about the same to replace it as an aftermarket exhaust costs in the first place. There is a good weight saving by removing it though.
Happy travels, Nick

Just got back from the Pan American tour on a Dakar. Didn't change the exhaust and I don't think its worth the effort, unless you want to lose some weight. As far as I was able to figure out nowhere was I forced to put in leaded petrol.

I live in Leatherhead, and Vines are ervicing the bike right now - so I will now before long if there is a problem with the Cat.

If you want any more advice - email me and I'd be happy to meet up

Richard

I have quite recently finished an Africa trip with my 650 with cat, I had not removed it or have the exhaust replaced or anything. Have done 20.000 km without any problem and taking only leaded fuel, so in my opinion it is not worth removing (apart as indeed mentioned the weight).
