brake recall 1200 GS

just read in the paper (non m/c) that BMW have issued a recall for the brakes, it mentioned 1200 GS and RT ( I think ). apparently some issue with the brake lines fracturing.

haven't seen mention of it here yet, just incase anyone's on the road at the mo. you might want to pop into a dealer.

maybe a BeeMer-er can provide some more info ?

EDIT: they mentioned 120,000 bikes recalled, so I assume it covers quite a few models.

cheers

from the UK Independent newspaper:

"Thousands of BMW motorcycles, including some owned by British bikers, are being recalled because of a possible brake problem, it was revealed today.

The recall, believed to involve around 122,000 machines worldwide, covers various versions of six models.

These include the R 1200 GS Adventure model, versions of which were ridden by Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor in their 2007 Long Way Down biking adventure.

Letters received by British owners of the bikes said vibrations could cause the front brake lines to develop leaks which could allow brake fluid to escape which could lead to a failure of the front brakes.

The other models involved are the R 1200 GS, the R 1200 R, the R 1200 RT, the R 1200 ST and the K 1200 GT."

Think I'll stick with my old battered 1150GS, it still seems to work fine after 100,000 miles.

although recalls are not solely a BMW issue, you'd think dealers selling bikes that are destined to be away from home for a while would send emails not letters...

I wonder what the cause is, as banjo bolts and brake lines are as old as the hills..

Blame the lawyers and spammers for the letters, a photocopy of something you claimed to post is still worth more than a copy of an e-mail even with a read receipt.

Banjo bolts are as old as the hills but the guys in China and India busy casting them with a camping stove while the tides out have about as much knowledge as you can aquire between recieving the order and hitting the sand pit. What good companies are doing is keeping stock against quality issues from suppliers 12 weeks away by sea but the accountants don't like it. For the next few years we are going to see this issue move up the technology chain from the nuts and bolts level into more complex items.
