Boxer Rear Brake Arm

The drum brake arm bolted to the bevel box on my r80 basic has rotted through again. The bike was new in 1999 and this is the second time this has happened. When i spoke to motorworks i was told that the original was a result of a cheap cast used by BMW, but the replacement has only lasted 2 years as well. The bike is used all year round and is cleaned regularly so road salt is not the problem
1) Is this a problem anyone else has suffered from ( I never had this trouble with my old K75 which I ran for 15yrs)
2) Is there anyone know of anyone who can manufacture a brake arm out of something more substantial
Thanks

Hi Andy,
I think you must be unlucky. My bike was new in 1999 as well, and I also live in London and my bike lives outside all year round. I still have my original brake arm and no sign of corrosion. Are you sure there are no local dogs p*ssing on your bike ?

Yupp - but mines an 89 R100Gs. Arm looked ilke it had been sawn though - but no, just rot.
The only saving grace is if it broke, on mine, you wouldn't notice any sudden difference in rear braking.
Apparently it's a known problem area !
(nice to know eh !)

Road salt is EATING the lever-arm to the drum-brake -:(
I do agree with the referred statement from MotorWorks - the arm is of very poor aluminum casting/quallity! Looking at the arms from the 70:ties, they were of much better quallity. Why do it have to be of aluminum ?!...

Had any better luck since 2003 with yours ?
