BMW650GS: what to look at before buying it?

Hi everyone!

I'm about to make an offer for a 2004 650GS, with heated grips/Hazard lights/ABS, that I checked yesterday. Price £4,500 (inc. high wind shield). Any particular thing specific to this bike that I should look at? I will use to travel around South America in a year time.
Regarding the exhaust: what is the function of the left one? It did not seem to produce any smoke (it was cold yesterday so easy to see) although it was getting a bit hot. Is that normal?
Also the paint/finish around the cooling pump was blistered - is it normal?
Thanks,
Maria

The paint was blistered around the water pump on mine after 15,000 miles - its just something that happens.

Check the weephole between the water pump casing and the engine block. They have a habit of eating the water/oil seals and thats where it leaks. Make sure theres no oil in the water & vice versa.

Other than that its all common sense really - same things to look at as with any second hand bike.

Hope that helps.

The left hand exaust is the catalytic converter, the gasses pass from the left exhaust to the right hand exhaust which baffles the sound before it comes out. Nothing comes out of the left hand one, the 'hole' at the back is only cosmetic.
If you look under the rear mudguard at both exhausts you will see a short pipe which connects them together.

Steering head bearing are lousy. Put the bike on the centre stand, weight on the back so the front is floating and move the bars left to right.... feel a notch in the centre???

It does seem a bit weird! My brand new dakar had no emmisions from the left hand side exhuast. Dealer had same "catalytic converter" story.

exhaust

I'm on a 2002 Dakar. I had to go out and check! Around 20% of the total exhaust comes from the left pipe, 80% from the right...
