BMW GS frame substitution question

I have a 1988 BMW R100GS with a bent frame. I know that '88 to '90 are the same frame and am wondering if someone knows what the key difference is in the 90 onward frames and if they might be a suitable substitute for an '88 frame?

You can use the later frames, including the Basic/Kalahari.

My initial thoughts would concur with Alibaba

Why not get the frame straightened?

I bought a R80G/S a couple years ago that had a bent frame. At the time I lived in the U.S. and found a guy in California who straightened the frame for a bit more than $50 U.S. Of course, shipping the frame out and back cost quite a bit more than that, but the total cost, including powder coating was much less than buying a titled frame -- even if one were available for purchase.

A straightened frame never gets really straight...

Consider strengthening the frame at the same time:
Airhead racer rebuild - ADVrider

With both a straightening and fram strenghtening I guess you may get a frame that will be ok to use...
Had some other homepages/companies doing framework as well, just couldn't find them on my harddrive at this moment. When you brows the web you'll find them.

There is only one (1) in Scandinavia who really can straighten airhead frames... there are a few who does it... beware what service and skill you buy... Get "solid" references, and check-out the guys personally before you place an order. It is your money, and your health/safety/life...

I'm Satisfied with the Result

I found the person who did the straightening on the Airheads website (airheads.org) and compared him with the one other frame straightener who specialized in airhead frames. Before straightening, the bike was difficult to control at 50 mph and downright scary above 60. Now, I have confidence above 80 mph -- about as fast as I would want to ride this bike.

Of course, YMMV.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
