blown fuse dilema?
 

Hello. Although i have a strong mechanical aptitude, i thought it would be a good idea to ask for some advice before i rip my bike apart in a problem-solving frenzy. My '89R100GSPD blows the fuse everytime i turn on the turn-signal, also effecting my tach, horn and brakelight. Is this a common problem? Where should i start first? Any response will be great!

Have you tried replacing the relay for the load Shedding Device (under the tank)?

If you disconnect any one of the components, does the fuse still blow?

Have you tried using a multimeter to find the problem?

Have you access to a good wiring diagram, preferably in colour? If not, I can try e-mailing you a colour diagram copied from the Haynes manual.

Hello, and thanx for the responce. I had planned to work on my bike this winter, but money, time and this re-call issue has not been at all co-operative! Would you believe when talking to a customer service rep. at BMW USA and asking for the motorcycle division, the answer i received was"Uh-sir, this is BMWya, we don't make motorcycles..."?!?? Anyways, im finally on the right track and will hopefully have the bike registered in the next couple of weeks. And if all goes well i'll have a job and some money to start making my repairs by early Feb! Most of the questiond i've posted on this fab. forum are in preperation and research for when i finally have a chance to follow through! Thanx for the tip Steve, i'll be sure to begin there. Grant, your a star! If your in town, i'd like to buy you and Susan a beer.

Right now we're heads down with the website and trying to make a buck or two... and my garage is a disaster. And I'm in deep trouble if I don't get a big enough hole in it for the car before the next snow falls...

so i finally got off my lazy but and drove my bike into my shop and tore it down. Turns out the problem was so simple even i could figure it out! The spade connectors to the signal light were conected without being insulated and created a short. Little bit of black tape makes a good fix for now. The wiring harness looks a bit ratty, covered with hockey tape and a few loose ends, i think it would give me peace of mind replacing the whole thing and starting fresh. This wiring system isn't nearly as complicated as i thought it would be, but i do have some more questions. I'll start another post...

I rewired my dakar a year ago thing now work as their surposed to lights lit battery charged and when needed heated vest switched on with no probs even with 55/100 watt headlight bulb.Most the things done were ideas off the net so try these for a start-

On my dakar the solder points replaced with ring conectors and the headlamp wiring replaced and a relay for dip and main fitted with a new fuse box added fuse for main and dip beam,fuse for fiam horns ,fuse for accessory socket greater protection for the electrics over all
A thunder cat diode board got and fitted where have we heard this before why did't like this in the first place serious bit of kit
I got mine from eurotech Motorsport in california $93 or try motorrad elektrik
Next moved the bloc conector for the rear light cluster forward so its under the tank and the conector for the oil pressure light and neutral light there as well the block conectors rebulit you can get the pins from vehicle wiring products in Derby

hi voltage regulator fitted
all the the wires soldered then crimped to conectors and then covered with adhesive lined polyolefin strong &waterproof
time taken in all ten days spread over the winter for a full rebuild I would not think all wiring needs to be do but defentately
1 the wire between the diode board and starter motor 3or 4 mm thin wall cable
2 the headlamp wiring (another post)
3 the wire between the the fuse box and ring conector on the green black wire curcuit
4 earth wire from diode board to starter mounting bolt
