At Last It Happened !
Hello everybody,
Preparing for the trip will start at May 10 and rebuilded carbs yesterday. We were linking the throttle cables to the carbs of My R80 Gs Basic, we realised that at least half of cable was broken/cut and entwined especially at handlebar and carbs entry. It was impossible to adjust the carbs for correct setting. Engine started to yelling. There is no BMW repairshop and no shop I can find throttle cable. We arranged to go a bike repair shop nearby. Then, gas didn't work at all. :oops2: Felt so bad. Asked for a truck to put the bike on. Ordered throttle and clutch cables. Now I don't know if I can put the wires on or should I take them to repair shop? What do you think? As a result: We must have throttle and clutch cables as spares at hand. Infact front brake cable will be good to have as spare. I thank God, it didn't happen to me when I was on the trip... In this case had to call home country or someone from the community (if exist) in the country I am in and try to do it myself or finding someone to fix it. |

a similar but not as bad issue did hit me today.... just did my last preps for the trip in May, run a bit around and to the fuel station to top up to the rim..... paid and wanted to start the bike a KTM LC4 640 Enduro with a 28Lt. Tank)........ since my EL starter is not working since a year (how cares... the kick starter dose the job, to fix the luxury of Thumbing would cost me the amount of the next trip), so I pulled the decompression leaver to kick the bastard in to live....... Ohhh dear, the cable just snapped......... well not to bad I managed to kick start here up any way and run straight down to my local dealer who was just about to call it a weekend and locked the door..... I could persuade the guy to boot up again and hand me over a matching cable I needed. Yes, better things go wrong now than later, involved much more hassle if you are on your way or on that lonely lane and you know the cable is new, which gives you rest of mind.... good luck |

I would recommend to anyone with a 'new to them' bike to do a full service. change out all teh cables and plugs to keep for spares. That way you know they will fit. ( this includes fanbelts for cars). If an old part is clearly or found to be not serviciable, buy two spares, compare them carefully and fit one. Self sealing plastic bags are ideal to keep parts clean and dry ( for possibly years) For BMW's include a pair of diaphragms. for chain drive bikes, check the chain sprockets renew if worn and fit new chain, again reserve the old one for a spare if not badly worn.
If you just buy new spares and carry them....... and they dont fit :( Somewhere I have puncture repair outfit, I think. My last puncture was in teh winter of 1961/2 |
If your out .. and they fail .. try the choke cables .. they may not be perfect but they will mean not calling on a truck.
