Hi, its funny just how few specialist shock absorber dealers there are in Africa, of course I could always have one sent out from Europe, with all the hasel of post offices loosing things or customs impossing huge duties, so the solution presented itself, weld on some more brackets and fit a damper unit from a car, cost about 30USD and works a treat, looks well trick, wonder if it will pass the MOT when I return.

The big difference with Works is that they custom build the shock for YOU and your bike and your load. Appropriate spring and damping for it and your riding style.

Ohlins sells one shock fits all... solo or two-up fully loaded with touring gear. No way the standard shock spring is stiff enough. They do have a "stiff" spring IF you can get it - and it still isn't quite enough for two-up loaded.

My Works shock has been brilliant in 16 years of use. One rebuild at 12 years, slowly losing pressure - dirt cheap rebuild, instant turnaround, only needed seals. No oil leaks ever.
Had a look at the Works Performance site...Still have to ask How much are they?

You just know that the answer is going to be "it depends"

Which bike, which shock design/model, etc?? Works custom builds to suit - that adds variability to the pricing.

As always, best bet is to email them at sales -youknowwhatgoeshere- worksperformance.com

Tell them exactly what you want, rider weight and ability, load, bike model/year, expected type of use etc.

Expect pricing similar to Ohlins, more or less. Quality shocks cost $$$. Cheap shocks cost more over the long haul. Ask Chris Bright how many stockers he went through - disastrously and messily in the worst places - before he was finally convinced and bought an Ohlins.

i have just purchased an olins shock for my bmw r 80 gs 1992 from motor works on 01484353600 the shock is bm836 and was deliverd next day so thay hold them in stock
the price was the cheepest that i have seen
the shock has damping control and remote ride hight adjustment fitting was easy and the ride is super even loaded up

It's nice to know that they have them in stock now, they didn't back in May nor did anyone else. My car shock seems to work well and as it has been on there since Ethiopia and I am now in Namibia it can continue to work until I get home.

As a final bit to this one. Hagons have had my shock back and have admited there was a fault in manufacture with the damper rod. This caused the rod to wear out the seal prematurly. The extra damper welded on has now been removed and the rebuilt Hagon fitted. Shame it wasn't built right in the first place.

shock absorber R80 GS
Hello,
What a shock absorber choice for my R80 GS 1982, to travel on roads deteriorated with much dust?

If a regular travel on African roads could advise me...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
