Acerbis Tank for a 100gs
 

I have just today managed to acquire an Acerbis Tank for the 100GS and I was wondering if anyone has experience fitting one.
I know that the oil cooler needs to be relocated and I will probably have to go for the Touratech kit which places it behind the high mudguard...is this likely to cause any problems?
It didn't come with any mountings, so I need some advice on how to mount it securely.
What modifcations if any do I need to make to the seat?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I bought the Touratch kit and wasn’t very pleased.

1) The mounting hardware for the oil-cooler had to be cut and re-welded, it didn’t fit. I have no idea if this is “normal”.
2) The oil lines are thinner then the original. There was an old airhead with a high mounted oilcooler and you can use the oil-lines from this one. Can’t remember the part# but you can also buy it from HPN.

HPN (and probably others) sell a mounting kit, it’s around 90€.

I've decided to dispense with the oil cooler all together. From what I have read many an airhead owner has toured the globe without one, to no ill effects.

I'm not sure I'd agree with your information about the oil cooler. Are people getting catastrophic engine failure? Not likely. Are oil temperatures exceeding 'safe' limits without the oil cooler? Likely. I've read many postings on the benefits of fitting an oil cooler to an airhead, and have concluded that it is a good idea especially for the larger motors, or any motor running at low speeds and/ or with a heavy load and/ or in hot climates. Sound's a lot like adventure touring to me. BMW fitted that model with an oil cooler for a reason, I'd be reluctant to remove it simply due to the hassle of finding a proper mounting bracket. Just my 2 cents :) YRMV.

On the Acerbis/ HPN tank side, I believe that there are two extra brackets that get clamped or (ideally) welded to the frame just above the top mounting bracket for the crash bars. The tank slots into these to provide extra support for the large 'cheeks'. Does this make sense? I think HPN sells this kit - their frames have the taps welded on from what I can tell.

I fitted one of these tanks to my GS Basic 8 yrs ago. The clamps bolt on ok and stay put but I had to trim down the rubbers to make them fit the slots in the tank. The tank is nice and stable but the biggest drag is the wasted fuel in both bottom corners. I used mine on a trip round S. Europe and morrocco and it does trap a surprising amount of heat around the cylinder heads under hot conditions - managable on an 80 but worth thinking about on a 100 before considering removal of the oil cooler.
