21" and 18" rims and knobblies on a 1150 GSA

Hi Guys

I've got a spare set of wheels already with TKCs on. Good compromise tyres.

I am hoping a set of proper off road rubber will be better, and I will use them 80%+ off road.

Questions:

- Has anyone tried, does it make a difference.

- Recommendations on rims. Would standard 250/400 moto-x fair be suitable, can pick up at sensible prices used.

- Recommendations on tyres (its a lot of weight). Make and widths.

- Any gotchas to look out for?

Does anyone by any small miracle have any used rims, hubs, spokes?

Plan is to build myself using a local wheel builder.

Any help much appreciated.

The difference between TKC 80 and real offroad 21/18 tyres is an enormous.
TKC is much more street oriented tyres in that comparison, it is good for
hard terrains but awful in mud, on leaves, in forrest... Infact, it is slightly better than Tourances, but much more worse in tricky offroad conditions.

Which then begs two questions (that I can't answer myself):

1. Why if you are doing 'serious' off-roading would you take a 1150GS?
2. What is a really good off-road tyre?

Sorry mfredrik,

I have nothing much to offer except that I have travelled over 80,000kms around the world using only Tourances and I have been happy 98% of the time.

Perhaps a bit more background, like where will you be travelling or what is the exact intended use of the GS would help provide more detailled responses.

1. Not good choice, but that is what mfredrik has asked
2. Something that put you on the top of the muddy hill without too much
stress.

Well, I have tryed various enduro tyres on my Tenere in last 220.000 km,
on different terrains and in all conditions, so just posting my reflections.
