1988 r100 gs shaft drive

Ive just purchased '88 r199 gs in fantastic condition looked after by fanatical BMW mechanic. I have told him my plans to ride back to Aus from Germany and asked him about shaft drive concerns. He says no drama however he does seem to ride like a grandma. The bike has done 70k. do i take a spare drive shaft with me and where do i source one or take it easy or hope for the best..... best not hope for the best but once i leave europe what else is there.

No

I wouldn't bother taking a spare shaft - very heavy things...

You could:

1. Get it adapted and have grease nipples fitted - there's probably a thread about it on here somewhere - this makes it last almost forever from what people say.
2. Check out the existing shaft and associated bits to check for signs of wear.
3. Make sure you have Motobins number handy when you're on the road and they can pop one in the post to you should it all go pear shaped.

It's best to take as few things as possible, but make sure the bike is properley prepared for the trip instead.

Eric Demant in Germany does an exchange shaft with grease nipples in... about €325.

He says the original shaft is good for around 40k miles. With a nipple, you re-grease it every 40k miles and there are no more problems.

He also does a shaft without the cush bearing in it. Thats lots more money and only really for the serious motorcrosser

Send me a PM if you want his email address

Hi John,

My name is Di, I am contacting you on behalf of Marcus who is unable to get to internet at the moment. In your reply to his post re 1988 r100 gs shaft drive you suggested that you could supply a German guy's email address. Would you please be able to do that. Bike down in Iran - any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
