1978 R100 in the Yucatan- clutch problem?

Hola from Tulum Mexico.
My 1978 R100/7 rode like a champ down here from Oregon. But after spending three months here i´m experiencing some problems...

My bike is reving a bit higher than normal. It will get up to 70 mph but only with an excessive rev of over 6500 rpms. The take off is not what it should be. Also upon slowing down, and downshifting through the 3,2,and 1st gears there is a rubbing, squeaking sound that is getting progressively worse. Does this sound like a warped clutch Disk or Plate?

Any ideas?
Thanks
Peter

Not necessarily warped or burned, could also be just plain worn out - or could be oil on the clutch.

Regardless, it has to come apart and get whatever new parts it needs.

The squeaking sound is weird, I'd try to get a mechanic to listen to it or better, ride it. Probably just the clutch, but could be something else - hard to diagnose FOR SURE without hearing it.

How many miles on the clutch/bike?

Are you sure the clutch cable is correctly adjusted? Ir it's tight that will do it. Also, ride it GENTLY so you DON'T overheat and toast the clutch pressure plates.

If it's just the clutch that's worn out, it's relatively cheap. If you toast everything, it's expensive. As soon as the clutch shows signs of slipping you want to drive it very gently to a repair shop and fix asap.

There are some tricks to doing it, so if you don't know what you're doing, check back. You COULD screw it up royally.

Thanks Grant,
You offer quite a quick service. The bike has 81,000 miles and some oil seeps out of various spots on the engine block. Quite possible that some oil got into the clutch system. I may end up selling my bike for $500. Waiting for parts in the Yucatan and without a knowledgeable BMW mechanic in the area makes it a challenge. We´ll see.
Thanks
Peter
