1200s - Check your Final Drive Bolt !
 

The final drive of my 1200 GS had been replaced by IRV Sievers BMW in Orange about three months ago at approx. 5000 miles (way too much play!) .
Since then I randomly wiggle the rear wheel for play since I never regained full trust.

Three days ago (7000 miles) low and behold I check again and notice some play at the joint between final drive and shaft. Upon inspection I find that the one and only bolt holding the final drive in place has worked itself out to the degree of almost touching the spokes!!!

There was one more turn in the bolt before touching the spokes and about two more turns before falling out!

Checking on a German forum boxer.de I found someone who had the same trouble, however he noticed it when the rear wheel blocked and almost caused a major accident.

I assume that the mechanic at Irv Sievers did not torque the bolt correctly when replacing the final driveabout 2000 miles ago.

I torqued the bolt using some tock tite. Further I am of the opinion that this bolted joint is a design mess. The head of the bolt is very small in diameter therefor the contact surface is minimal. There is no washer or any other device to protect the bolt from working itself loose.

Please guys/girls with 1200 gs's check your bolt!
