2000 BMW F650GS Dakar Oil Pressure Sensor

Hi All,

My oil pressure sensor has gone, for the second time on this trip, and the bike is leaking quite a bit of oil.

The motorrad in Bolivia has told me it will take 11 days to order the part, so I was wondering whether I could just plug the hole with a bolt, or something?

The oil comes out from inside the sensor itself, so I don't think it's just a seal, mind you, I have no idea how these things work (bikes in general I mean, I just ride them...).

I last had this part changed in Thailand, the mechanic there was less than keen to just use a bolt then, but I lucked out and bought a sensor of another 650 owner who was leaving his bike there for a while.

Try a regular auto parts supply store. Auto Zone number PS 177 fits.
It is a M10x1 thread so a bolt of that size would also work. Take the old one in to the parts store so you can match it up, the pressure rating just has to be in the ball park. Not sure of the pressure but 4 to 7 bars rings a bell. Some times you can repair the electrical part of the sensor to stop the leak.

I know there are Auto Zones in Mexico but not sure of Bolivia

That's interesting. Could you please post the details/ specs once you find the replacement working fine? BM never really provides any details on this stuff.

Also, was your old plug and first replacement the new one or the old 90 degree one?

Hi,

Don't have the specs I'm afraid, told the mechanic the size, and an hour later a similar looking part appeared. It's all connected up, however the oil warning light doesn't come on when I turn the key before starting, so presumably not quite the correct part, no oil leak though.

The first one was the original with the bike, second was identical. The replacement part on the BMW parts fiche looks completely different, so I assume they've replaced it with a better design now.

That's right. The old one was a common issue which apparently the new one resolved. cheers.
