1200GS cutting out
In Morocco and one of our group on a 2007 1200GS has a problem with bike cutting out. The bike goes through system check OK with no warning lights, starts OK and then splutters to a halt. Fuel quality is OK as others filled at same station. Currently starts OK after a tow to hotel at Azrou but worried about tomorrow.

Any suggestions welcome.

Spark? Check you have spark - remove one plug cap and put another spark plug in there (leave cyc ready for fireing)

Fuel? While the fuel may have been ok for the rest .. you could still have a problem .. Don't know no the oil heads - can you remove an injector and check it squirts to the ground ?

We'll assume air is ok.

Umm is the starter motor used as a return circuit for sensing something? By that I mean the brushes/comutator could be dirty and not making good contact for the sensing of the electronics .. bit away from the basics ..

My first guess is the TPS, plug and play on the 1200's. Not very common but it happens. Did he maybe drop the bike once and damage the sensor?

Check the side stand cut-out connector is on securly, could be slightly loose, so itermittant. Could have had a knock some where?

1200 have 2 knock sensors and 2 CO2 (Lambda) sensors.. think they have 2 TPSes too?

Don't know the real detail on that bike .. .. Possibly teh fuel pump controller (on top of teh pump) is not doing the right thing .. as the engine speed changes so too does the fuel pump output .. possibly when starting the pump runs falt out then after starting backs off ... ? that would suggest fuel filter problems to me ..


CO2 sensor faults, knock sensor faults should enable a 'limp home' mode - bike should run ok .. reduction in fuel economy. A TPS problem could cause bad running ..

Either the problem has gone away for the moment (fingers crossed) or they are working on it .. Tim, we like to 'know' what the solution is when you find it (or if it is lying dogo).

Yes, it was a faulty fuel pump controller. I am now aware of OVER 100 failures of this part, even on 08 models,
see 1200GS/GSA fuel pump controller failures

I had a 1997 R1100R that did the same trick. The FI control on that was via a half size relay. The ECU self check like most uses a pulsed low voltage to check the wiring integrity. One bad earth and the stupid little relay flutters and the stupider ECU gives up and cuts it's own ground and hence the fuel.

I had reasonable sucess by running another wire to every ground on the FI, so they all saw the same "zero", but the final limitation was the variation in badly made (BOSCH) mini relays that varied with temperature. BOSCH were the only ones I could get and the ECU didn't like higher quality full sized relays (which wouldn't fit except as a test, never mind with a resistor pack to please the ECU).

When I got to the point I could change a hot relay for a cold one before the traffic lights changed, I sold the bike and got one with carbs!!
