12 ADV tanks for the 12GS

I'm one of the guys getting the ADV tank so we went through a few hoops to make sure that

1. It fit;
2. What parts were similar
3. What parts were new
2. Is was an easy installation

The dealer had a 12ADV to work with as well as the parts fiche for the 12GS and 12ADV. Long story short, the front frame piece that the tank sits on is the same. The fuel pump (singular) is the same. There is no second fuel pump. The seat alignment is the same. So the only concerns were internals. Except for the flange, it all read the same. We've now confirmed that the flange is the same. Only one of the trim panels near where your knees lays is longer so I ordered it. It mounts in exactly the same position.

An interesting point that came up yesterday is that the metal tab that will hold the 2 front interior brackets DO NOT hang from the same tab that holds the 12GS gas tank panels, but the good news is that those tabs are on the 12GS too. They aren't used but it certainly looks like the ADV and the 12GS were designed at the same time. Given the number of owners who buy a 1150 ADV tank for their 1150s I'm not surprised. Also think production costs. Why go through a totally different frame when BMW, outside of HD are the kings of platform sharing.

The only area of concern, if you can even call it that, is the fuel lines. The fuel pump pod is in the same location on both bikes but the right side pod has been moved to the same location as the left pod which makes me wonder if the fuel lines will be long enough.

I'm expecting delivery in two weeks. I'm hoping to get her in shortly after that and if I can make myself available, take some detailed pictures.

I was originally set to go with the TT aux. tanks but they are still in development in Germany with no release date set. This is a cleaner mod and cheaper too, BTW.

I saw one recently on a 1200GS and it looked very serious at 40 odd litres. Uses standard fuel pump etc.

Simmo is right there, Aqualine have pods made for the R1200GS now! One thing you may not know is that these tanks except for the prototypes will be the ones that TT will sell under their banner. And the guys that are making them are now the agent for TT Aus so you will be able to purchase all TT gear in Oz from now on instead of importing from either Germany or another country. Simmo, I believe that the pods you saw were on a blue R12GS from Tassie which belonged to a woman who does heaps of km on Iron butt rides etc? I have the 2nd set on my 1200 and I find they are working fine. The good thing is that you can take them off in about 15 mins and put your bike back to standard exeppt for the tap that is fitted in your original tank. The other pro for these is that if you don't want to fill them (city traffic) you can just leave them empty and turn the fuel off and they weigh no more than the original side covers! I can say that they are the way to go and am very happy with mine. I believe the person you met can get around 700 km out of hers and I can get maybe 630 out of mine (I must ride harder)? Check them out and call Tony regarding them as he has all the info you require and also will help you fit them if need be?

12 ADV tank conversion is complete
 

I recieved my tank yesterday and did the conversion overnight. Long story short, it's a direct swap. See the link for detailed step-by-step instructions.

It's a direct fit, no cutting, drilling, modifying of anything on the original bike. It's the exact same frame and fuel pump, same part numbers, the suck pump on the non-kick stand side, is different and needs to be ordered. There is a vendor, in vendor forum, on advrider, who is making up the kit based on my experiences.
