Renting out your bike?

Hi,

So, I am now in Spain for a while and have my DL1000 (2007) here. I'm looking at doing a few trips into Morocco on a 640 Adv, which leaves the DL a bit redundant until I head home.

It's ideal for touring Europe two-up, or for the slightly larger rider :-) has top box, panniers and heated grips. Is ideally located in Barcelona, perfect access to all of Europe. So, I'm thinking someone may want to rent it.

But, what's the deal with renting from a renters angle? Do you sell it, then buy back. I'm thinking it's really only worthwhile for multi-week trips. Anyone done it/doing it?

cheers,
doug

Interest in Renting

Hey Doug,
I a very interesting in renting your bike in Spain if you still have it there and its not in use. I am looking to do a trip somewhere in the world starting around the beginning of may for up to 2 1/2 months. I am a new member so cant PM. But you can contact me at my site robemrich.com - Bio.

Doug,

Not sure if you got any responses, but I've thought about trying this too. Seems like there are three alternatives;

1. Do some form of formal hire agreement, which I suspect gives significant headaches and/or liabilities relating to business activities and could even be illegal for an individual.

2. Add someone to your own insurance temporarily, and enter in to some sort of agreement relating to maintenance costs and any damage / insurance claims. Fine if you can trust them.

3. Sell it and agree to buy it back at 'x' cost if it is returned in an agreed condition / timeframe. Give them a copy V5 or fill the original in with pencil. They would need to insure it in their own name. Lack of V5 in their own name wouldn't be a problem in the EU. Make the pricing an encouragement for them to sell it back to you, or keep something of theirs, otherwise they might decide they will keep it or sell it to someone else.... You would then be screwed, because you did actually sell it !

I would be interested in any thoughts, or anyone who might want to try it out with my Blackbird or XTZ 660

Kevin

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
