Colorado, All or Multiple City Thread - Camping

There is a biker friendly campground in southwestern Colorado: the KOA in Ouray, Colorado. A tent area for motorcyclists. Truly one of the best KOAs I've visited: wooded area; by a creek; and super day rides.

I'll second that!
SUPERIOR campground in the chain, nice riding area!
They have a separate motorcycle camping area that's close to all of the facilities onsite. (The campground is large, and they ask that you not use motorcycles for transportation on the grounds....if you camp in the designated MTC area, you're within 75 yards of food, bathrooms...everything)
They have an onsite cafe we didn't sample.
The tent/mtc sites are grass covered, and shaded by tall trees.
I was trailering, so camped for 6 days at a general tent site in the rear of the campground that was very large and private.
The bathrooms are the best I've seen in a campground.
There is a supermarket 5-6 miles away, and plenty of tourist stuff...bars, restuarants within 2-3 miles in the the town of Ouray.
The owner rides, and they also have a Road King for rent, daily.

Thanks, Grant!

Here's a link to the thread on my bulletin board where I posted more info. on the area, and pictures.

I plan on going back to Colorado next summer.
Ouray also has some reasonable motels in the 'non-peak' sections of the summer season.

Just got back from Colorado, and stayed at a couple of more campgrounds worth mentioning.

Gunnison KOA, very close to town, food and services. Good bathrooms!

Ouray KOA, see messages above!

Trinidad Lake State Park, Trinidad, CO.
Good for a state campground. Close to town. Good bathrooms. On CO 12, which is a great road.

I'm curently staying at Iron Horse
Motorcycle Lodge in Stecoah, North Carolina. We're having springtime thunderstorms and this is a great place to hang out.
The roads in the area offer superb riding, including the Dragon at Deals Gap, and are only minutes away. The owners are nice people and very motorcycle friendly. There are very comfortable cabins and a number of camp sites along a little stream.
This will be the site of the June H.U. meeting - perfect spot.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
