__________________________________________________ _______________________________________

I am sorry to say that due to recent changes in the French tax system we have decided to discontinue our BnB, It was always just a hobby of my wife to occupy our time and allow us to meet people.

We had a very pleasant evening there thanks Larry.

The rooms are very beautiful and comfortable and we were kept entertained by our wonderful hosts. Also a good distance down for a first day of travelling from Cherbourg if you are heading south.

Thanks

I concur, a great place to stay and very friendly hosts, despite the fact that we turned up unannounced at 11 30 pm.
A dip in the pool was great in 40 degree heat.
Thanks Larry,
Sean

new website

I now have an embryonic website being set up. Undoubtedly it will change and possibly move. I have registered the domain name "le-frene.com" this is currently hosted at http://le-frene.awardspace.com/ and a mirror site at http://www.le-frene.com/

Over the winter I will improve the site to include details of some of the local attractions. There is also a local one man band BMW guru who does repairs when not restoring ex Government bmw bikes for resale.

also Thanks to Bossies and Seanh for the praise, we are glad you enjoyed your time here.

Hi oldbmw, I'm interested in the changes in the French tax system that you refer to. Can you shed any light on it for me please, as I'm considering the B'n'B career option. Cheers.

To encourage tourism the French government took an unusual decision to allow a house owner to use up to two bedrooms in their own home for BnB without the need to register as a business or pay tax or be in any way involved with the French tax system.

This was far too revolutionary for them and they rescinded that decision. The French government is hell bent on destroying all commercial activity with draconian tax and social security laws. For instance. I had hoped to keep 3 or four Parthenaise cattle on the farm. But even If I keep just one, according to them a farm of this size will need to pay 19,000 Euros (in 2006) each year social security payments and as a consequence a similar amount of tax. So the land is left feral and is degenerating depriving future generations of any chance to farm it. AND therefore whatever it could have produced will now have to be imported from abroad. They simply won't recognise the concept of a hobby farm.

I have no wish to entangle myself with the French tax or social security systems as it is nigh on impossible to disentangle afterwards. Sometime it can be achieved by dying but that could easily take a few years.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
