Cheap accomodation in latin america

In general, whenever I travel through any part of latin america, I always try to find a motel (in latin america, these are quickie motels). They can be found very reasonably priced if you choose to stay 12 hours. I usually arrive about 5-7pm and leave with the light in the morning.

These places usually have security and are carefully watched so people do not enter without paying and they always have garage doors or heavy curtains so nobody can see your bike and therefore not be stolen. They usually have large beds, hot water (most of the time, ask first and test if possible), big televisions and various other amenities. Some even serve food and liquor, some cheap, some not so cheap.

For a night, you can expect to pay about $15-40 depending on the quality of the place. I have found them to be numerous in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador($8).

Haven´t had a horrible experience yet other than some don´t have hot water or properly functioning cable.

I have only seen a few with internet (Tapachula, Mexico)

Personally I'm a huge fun of CouchSurfing and other similar sites. First of all, it's cheap. Secondly, you really get to know local people and learn something about the country. Of course, if you ride for 10h daily, you probably wouldn't have any energy left to socialize. Me & my wife, we love it and over the years have met some wonderful people. I highly recommend.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
