Belize and Guatemala, Budget accomodation
 

we are unable to purchase a Belize Guatamala Lonely Planet (in English)here in the Yucatan and as much as we complain about them they really do make life a lot easier.Not at all happy about going to B and G with put one but at least we have a good map. Can anyone out there recommend budget accomodation for us please....remembering that we have TWO bikes.We dont have an itinery but the bikes are Shadows so do restrict us a touch. Though we would use Hyour replies to put together an itinery. We are happy wanderers rather than the speedy type of traveller.

In San Ignacio, Bz. try Martha's Guest House, Hi-Et,Central O'tel or Tropicool. In guatemala, you will have no trouble finding budget hotels. Just pick a destination, on average I paid $15-20 U.S.

Here in Guatemala there are budget hotels in the area of most turist destinations. Defenetly cheaper than Belize

many thanks for your help.....a wonderful Dutch couple at the hostel in Merida let us use their Lonely Planet and have it copied....so we are now armed with all the info we need....and feel a lot happier.
And yes we know about copyright...but we really did try and buy one...even offered to buy theirs from them for full price so that they could replace it when they got home....but they wanted to keep their used one...and survival is more important than copyright!!!!!!! Once again, many thanks.

Don't know about Lonely Planet guide or any others as to listings for cheap hotels in out of the way places but from what I've seen of such guides they usually concentrate their attention on all the major tourist destinations and leave vast expanses in between unmentioned . As a result if you try to base all your hotelling on such sources you will wind up rushing between listed locations and miss a lot of just as good usuable ones in between . Pick virtually any town and you can find a hotel and if you scout around a bit you can find the best price/parking facility for your bikes. In Cayo San Ignacio go to Max's Place Hotel at the north end of Burns St and get a room with two beds for $16.35US, but be early he only has room for 5 guests.Bath is shared but it is a nice clean place with a common room with TV. Tell him the guy with the yellow BMW sent you. Ther e is room for two bikes in his back yard once you get them through the narrow gate.
In Belize City no doubt you will have a listing for the North Front Street Guest House ,$15US single ,which is very basic but has secure bike parking. The Smokin Balaam Guest House ,$16.70US double, across the street from same can only take one bike in the lobby .Suggest also the Sea Guest H ouse at 118 Gabourel St, $12.50US single, with ample bike parking, located at 118 Gabourel Street in the nice part of old Belize right by the US embassy compound.
In Guatemala just across the border in Melchor de Mencos just 400m straight up the road from the border the Hotel Buen Samaritano has good parking at back and asks only 40 Quetzales for a room for two with private bath and fan, TV, cheaper than in Belize.GT has thousands of such hotels.

The last post was in 2006?? Anyway, a couple of weeks ago i stayed in the See Breeze Hotel in Corozal, right behind the border. 20$ per Room with Secure Bike parking. It's a good place for a night.

South of Belize City is Hopkins, a small "town" on the beach. I stayed in the Funky-Dodo Hostel for 7$ a night in a Dorm-Room. When i was there they constructed a bar and a lot of stuff was laying around, but for night it is okay.

In Guatemala i spent a night in Rio Dulce and i really recommend the Hotel Backpackers in Rio Dulce. I think it was 4$ a night in a dorm. Beautiful place above the water with a good restaurant nearby and secure bike parking.

In Antigua we stayed at Posada El Ruiz 2 a google search should find it. It was 5 dlls a night for both of us but this was a few years ago. It has secure parking and is cheap and cheerful. It has electric showers. The hotter you want the water the less you open the tap!
