Tunisia, Tunis - Ferry Area
 

Hi
We will be arriving with ferry in Tunis late afternoon 18/3.
After hassling with customs etc we need a place to stay.
Anyone who can recommend suitable camping or hotel with secure car park near Tunis / ferry.
Driving instructions or waypoints would be appreciated.

Yeah our late afternoon was 2am the next day.
Depending on arrival time there is a site, which is locked at night, at Hammam Lif, about 40mins drive from La Goulette follow the signs to Hammam Lif but you have to go past Hammam Lif to the site. Assuming that you're heading south you are then starting in the right direction.

We stayed at the Hotel Africa which we were told by a couple of sources was the best hotel in Tunis. It was pretty nice (very nice by African standards?) and not too unreasonable at £59 through e-bookers. Its very easy to find, straight over the causeway from the port to Tunis, keep going straight on and it is the tall blue glass building on the left about 1km from the end of the causeway, right in Tunis city centre. Ten minutes or so driving time from the port gate. They have an attended car park at the rear. Ideal if you'd like to explore Tunis itself, the medina is a five minute walk away.

I usually drive south to Kairouan to Hotel Amina, but if you want to stay in Tunis you can go Hotel Sidi Bou Said in Sidi Bou Said, not far from La Goulette

Leave the port, follow the signs to La Goulette and turn right towards Sidi Bou Said soon after leaving the port. Follow the main road at the first roundabout on this road, at the second roundabout take the 5 to option rather than the 5 past option. Continue through La Goulette - can be very busy in the evening. Go past the presidential palace on your right at Carthage - lots of palace guards and guys with motorbikes here. Up the hill, the road bears to the right and just after this is the turn on the right to the hotel - it is signposted, but can be difficult to see in the dark. Go down this road and turn first right, down the hill and into the gates of the hotel on the left hand side.
Cost depends on season, have started chargiong extra for a sea view - but worth it. Low season 58 or 68 dinahs (Dec 06). The view is great from the rooms, overlooking the Med. No need to book ahead as never many there in the low season.
Worth visiting the museum and the ancient Carthage port site if time.

Golden Tulip is a treat
 

Hotel Africa sounds handy but, unable to face another serving of Amilcar food, I was persuaded to try the 5* Golden Tulip in Carthage. Turned out to be as good as any 5* rtw, it's also 56 quid via the internet (more than double that over the counter but they are happy for you to organise internet via the cybercafe in the foyer). 25 mins from the port on the way to the Amilcar, turn off to the left at the bottom of the hill by the pres palace. Follow signs for La Marsa.

Great Italian resto (european prices); arrive early and leave late to make the most of it. It's a real treat after a long desert trip although not on the overlander's scene as the Amilcar is.

I you're on moto, the Youth Hostel located in the medina will accomodate you for 8 dinars per night. They will also let you bring your moto inside for security purposes. Hot showers as well.
Ask for directions to the Medina Port or to the French Embassy...the Medina Port door is hard to miss once at the French embassy. The ride up through the medina is a bit dodgy but pay some dude a couple dinar and he'll gladly show you the way.
