Wink Morocco - Camping in Morocco

Hi,
I'm planning on chasing the Dakar in the new year (08). Can anybody tell me how feasible it is to camp in Morocco, Mauritania, etc, in January?
Thanks.

I camped in Western Sahra Muritania & Senegal the same time last year most of the time with just a sleeping bag under the stars & also camped in southern Spain (which was cold) on my way home in the tent .Altitude & weather in Morocco might effect comfort but i think its doable .
Hope this is some help

hi kev,

i have some more question according to your camps in africa. i would be glad if you could supply me some answers.

1- was it wild camping that you have done?
2- is wild camping save in morocco, muritania and senegal?
3- were you alone or with someone else?

thanks in advance

Yes, of course you can camp, the biggest problem is the long night. According to the Mapsource celestial information utility, at the lattitude of Ouarzazate the sun sets on 10 January at 1739 and rises again 0722. That's a long time to be in a tent in the dark.

I did a night sleeping beside the bike near Zagora last January without a tent (or mat or sleeping bag or stove or food). Fortunately the weather was kind to me and only dipped to 1c. The coldest I've known it overnight in January was -10c, but that was in the mountains near Azrou after a snow storm.

I free camped regularly in Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania in Dec last year.

In northern Morocco, I used a tent with fly sheet, but from Western Sahara down I only used the inner lining of the tent. It would be quite feasible to camp at sea level with only a sleeping bag, but it would need to be at least a three season sleeping bag, as it does get cold at night, particularly the further north you are. In the mountains in Morocco it will naturally be colder.

If you are taking the coastal road through western sahara, just free camp anywhere off the road. You can generally ride 50 metres off the road and be relatively secluded.

cheers

thanks all,

my primery concern was safety rather than cold. so, if it is save, i can cope with cold using a 3 or 4 season sleepingbag i guess. also it will help me to save some money

thanks again to all

ps: tim, great pictures and adventure.

I've identified a wonderful place for a Biker Base in Morocco which is a day's ride from the ports, and a day's onward ride to Marrakech or Merzouga. I've done some sketches of how the site could be developed--full workshop, covered bike park, map room/library, internet room, games room, infinity pool, etc.

My problem is that the land is unregistered and I have had problems tracing the owners. I will try and progress this some more when I'm there next month, however I've also had some second thoughts about whether I want to oversee a two-three year building project, and then become an innkeeper.
