Fat Monkey

I've stayed a few nights in the Fat Monkey place listed above.
In 2006 it was US $5 for a twin bed room per night - not the cleanest but it did have a mozzie net fitted. I used my own sleeping bag liner on top of the bed linen.
There is quite a bit of room for camping available.

You can find other accommodation in lots of hotels and camp sites along the beach - varying quality and price of course. Any of them will sell you a beer as well.

Two things:

1. Watch your change with the guy(s) on the reception desk; he gives every appearance of being laid back and friendly, but he will rob you blind on the exchange rates if he thinks you are not "awake" (he did not get me, but he got my mate on this).
It's all based on UK£ > Malawi Kwachas > US$, from memory.

2. Touts/sellers in and around the hotel area, on the beach basically, are a bloody nuisence - persistence to the point of absolutely pissing you off.

3rd thing: if you go in the water, check out Bilharzia treatment - it is throughout Lake Malawi reputedly.

Mabuya in Lilongwe is a great place

S 13 59.953 E 033 45.573

Camping was $5
Dorms were $10
Private Cabins were $25

Fun place with a younger vibe...locals would come hang out at night...and it had good breakfasts.

Malawi Lodge - Run by two British motorbikers

Hi hubbers,

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Rachel and I have opened Malawi Lodge (Malawi Accommodation, Lilongwe Guesthouse, Cheap Lodge in Lilongwe). :thumbup1: We have been travelling the world (first by motorbike and then by campervan) for the past few years and we have finally settled in Malawi.

We love overlanders and have a number of trips under our belts. We have ridden motorbikes from the UK to India, UK to Mongolia and more recently driven a VW Campervan around South America we hope with all that experience that we know what you're after!

With comfortable accommodation, delicious food, roof top terrace, hot showers, cold beers and mechanics on hand you can't go wrong. Breakfast is included (a decent one - not just bread and jam! Eggs, fruit, decent coffee etc).

We actually set up the lodge to house volunteers for a school and sports centre the charity we run (Charity Gifts, Volunteer Work Africa, Malawi School UK) is building over the road. So if you fancy hanging around for a while and playing some sport or even helping out with building we will set you to work. There's not a whole load of sightseeing to do in Lilongwe and we think it's the best thing to do in the city (we are a little biased!).

We understand the mechanical disasters that can happen on the trip and we will help try and sort you out with reliable mechanics and parts suppliers. Some people have in the past used us to store their bikes and have parts delivered to us. We will help you out!

The lodge is in the West of Lilongwe (-13.943387,33.729475). It's in a village called Mtandire. Head North on the main road from African Bible College. When you are at the dip in the road where all the buses meet (this is called 'spearhead') Take a left and head up through the village. Ask anyone for 'Lingadzi Academy' and they will know where. But it's just 5 minutes up the road.

We look forward to meeting you!

Whisky, thank you for your post! I will be in Lilongwe on Thurs pm and urgently need to organise getting my new chain and sprockets fitted on Friday before I continue on my way. My bike is a fairly simple Suzuki DRZ, so nothing unusual, but I would hugely value any suggestion you might have of a decent mechanic who can fit the new parts? Many thanks, Claire
