Egypt, Aswan

Hi to all overlanders,

As we continue south on our motorbike trip from London to Cape Town, we have come across a really great campsite for all overlanders in Aswan. This is the point from which all ferry entries to the Sudan leave and if you are unlucky, like us, you may find yourself waiting for a few days to get on the next ferry. This campsite is called Adam's Home and provides basic facilities, i.e. shower, toilet, cooking, and shade, but mostly is provides Adam. He is a great guy who is more than accommodating and is very keen to help out where he can.

The camp is situated on the west bank of Aswan and is approximately 2 km south of the northern bridge just before you enter Aswan if you are travelling from Luxor, i.e. the north. At present, it cost LE10 (about 1 pound sterling) a night. It is only about 200m from the Nile and provides an idyllic setting for your stay in Aswan.

Have you contacted Mahmoud Idris yet?
GO for a drink at the Aswan Moon, a floating restaurant on the NIle and ask for him.
When you meet him, won't you find out whether he still has the SA rugby jersey I gave him?

Hey buddy, good to hear from you.

I'll drop in on him if I get the chance. We have actually seen a guy riding around town on a bicycle with a Springbok jersey on, maybe that was him.

hey guys - nice tips for Aswan.

In Cairo at the moment and hoping for a few bits of route advice.

Aiming to get the 7 Nov Aswan ferry to Wadi Halfa.

But intending to head out to the west for a week first, going through the Oasis from Siwa-Bahariyya-Farafa-Dahkla-Kharga-Luxor then up to Aswan. But a fellow at a tourist office didn't believe that i could get from Siwa to Bahariyya or Khaga to Luxor. He also said that there was no way i could get a bike on a train to Aswan?

Did any of you take these routes and have any problems?

Many thanks for any advice you might have! And maybe see you on the ferry or Khartoum soon.

cheers.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
