Yamaha XT 660Z broke down in Brisbane
 

Hey guys, i will try this here. May someone can help me.

I was travelling the last year from Germany to Australia. Australia is a temporary stop for me befor i wanna go to South America next year.

I was riding from darwin to Brisbane when my Bike broke down in Roma.
There was a Yamaha Dealer who did a Check on it. It seems to be a problem with the transmission, what means (so the yamaha dealer explained) they have to take off the engine to open it. What would cost a lot of money I do not have yet. I came to Australia for work to save money again for my second part around the world trip.

The Bike is now in Brisbane.

May someone can help me. I could give the bike to the yamaha dealer to get it fixed for some thausends bucks. but may there are some other option. may someone knows someone who knows someone :) a mechanic who would help me. someone i can work on this problem together etc.
Now i am in brisbane i have time. the bike dont have to be fixed soon. so it can be a project for a longer time.

What are the symptoms?

Transmission could be a pretty straightforward job...

symptoms are:

transmission has locked up
can not select gears

what the dealer did:
drain oil & coolant, remove clutch cover & clutch assembly, problem is in main case, will need to remove motor and split to repair.

indeed a straightforward job.
but maybe there are some retired mechanics outside whoe just waiting for having a task again :)

Sounds like bent selector forks.

You could reduce bill substantially by taking engine to reconditioner as a 'short engine' i.e. stripped down as far as you can; they can then split cases and fix problem - would probably halve the bill.....

Or get a manual and have a go yourself.... I think it's a pretty simple engine.

Bad luck. If you have no luck in the Brisbane area I'm in Newcastle about 800km south . I'm not a mechanic, but am an engineer, and have re-built a lot of motors including Yamaha singles. There are lost of guys with Zs there in Australia and a few in Brisbane.

You can also get the XT660Z service manual and the parts manual from XT660.com, you need to become a 'site supporter' first which will cost a small donation.

I'm not at all technically minded but in your situation, with somewhere to work on the bike, and the manual, I would certainly have a go myself.

However, the really good news is that one of the most knowledgeable gurus for the XT660 lives in Brisbane and if you become an XT660.com supporter you can contact him via the 'Ask Kev' forum. He's a motorcycle mechanic, so if you want someone reliable you probably can't do better.

i am not a good mechanic. not sure if i would give me a go myself to do this.
i do have the servicel manual.

coz first u have to find some work in brisbane and settle a little bit down, my bike problem has to wait a bit. the bike is comming on next weekend to brisbane with a trailer. i thought its better to get in touch with you guys to get some ideas what for options i have.

i will take a look on the xt660.com site. and i keep you docsherlock and navalarchitect in my mind. probably i will come back to you guys. thanks for the first.

Always happy to help; I also have the manual and will read up the relevant chapters. One hint, make sure you buy quality tools - repco are good over there. And a decent torque wrench and genuine Yamaha gasket set. A little more expensive in the short term but a good investment overall.

I'll check in from time to time to keep an eye on this thread.

If I wasn't out travelling I we could do it at my place unfortunately that is not the case. However I would suggest that you also post on the Australian section of ADVRider.com, it is a bit more active from a local rider point of view.

This should be a relative inexpensive fix if you do it yourself.

If you really get stuck I will keep an eye on this thread and make a phone call or two.

Are you still in Brisbane? How is the bike going? Did you get it repaired?

not yet. I got a qoutation from the local yamaha dealer. its quite to expensiv to repair it at the autorize dealer. therefor i could by a new engine.

i had some contact to a local mechanic specialized in XT. but the contact broke up.

my bike is still not running and stays in brisbane.
i had to manage to get some work and a place to stay. so now i have more time to think what to do and maybe find someone who can help me as a private project for less money.

if you have any advice i would be very happy

if you have some tipps. or can makle some phone calls. i still have no idea what to do with my bike. the official repair atr xamah would cost like half the price i bought the hike in germany. but its a bike with story. hald around the world now. i wann keep going with it. so some how i wann fix it.

yeahh. i need help. i am willig to pay for it. sure. but i cannot afford the rates that yamaha want. thats to much for my budget.

What did you do about the advice I offered earlier?

I followed your advice. Got a supporter. got in contact with kev. he wanted to help me. since 2 weeks no contact from him anymore.

may he is bussy and will come back to me later. could be. never know. so i have to find other solutions aswell, while this one is not working out yet.

hey, at the end i gave it to the yamaha service.
i started work here in brisbane so i stay in brisbane and options outside of brisbane are canceled for this reason.
i am surprised about the work i got and the money. so it is still f** mch money but i need my bike. i felt like half a human without my bike. so i did it for my biker-heart.

everthing is fine now.

ps: for those who are interested. the whole gearbox was demaged.

What was the bill?

the bill = one month working for me
