Where To Land and buy a Bike, Melbourne or Sydney?

Im planning as I land first thing to star the search for my bike for the trip... it's gonna be a used 3000USD$ +\- Big 600cc+ Thumper (XR/DR...etc) i'll also be needing to buy some spare parts, I guess do some service to it (oil, filters, spark plug brakes, chain etc etc etc.)

Where would you Aussie veterens recomnd, where are there more bike shops and better second hand market.

Sydney or Melbourne?

P.S
Where is the area all bike shops are located in melbourne, (address...)

Many thanks ahead

If you head to Melbourne have a look along Elizabeth street which is right in the middle of town.

With regards to values try http://www.glassguide.com.au/motorcycle-price.html to give you an idea.

cheers

If you want to buy privatley www.bikepoint.com.au is the place to visit. Whilst it is handy having all the bikes in one place (Elizabeth Street for example) the prices maybe higher due to the bike shops having to pay more rent. Still good to walk down a street in the centre of a big city and see lots of bike shops!

Good luck

...searching for the right bike!

G'day Merkado, all good advice so far, you could also, upon your arrival in Melbourne, grab a copy of a paper called Trading Post. This paper covers everything up to and including motorcycles, you'll get a good deal the only draw back is that you may have to travel to the suburbs to look at the bikes.
Good luck

Trading Post etc

This maybe easier for you www.tradingpost.com.au covers goods for sale nationwide
And this www.bikepoint.com.au bikes only nationwide
And this www.ebay.com.au covers goods for sale nationwide

That should be a good start to get an idea of prices

I bought a bike at Central Coast motorcycles in Gosford just north of Sydney. They were great. Let me use their tools to fit luggage. Reasonably priced. The head salesman likes a good cigar so that will get you a happy transaction!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
