The NZ Bike Rental Market

I am doing some research for a friend

What is the accepted view on the market for rentals in NZ?
Do you think that there are good deals to be had for overseas visitors and locals alike?
What kind of bike would you expect to be able to get for $100 a day? or $150?
What type of bike would you personally rent and how much would you expect to pay?
Has anyone rented overseas? and did it meet your expectations or not?

Any comments would be helpful!
Thanks in advance http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/im...lies/smile.gif

I rented a BMW R1100RT in 1999 in New Zealand and it cost something like $150 a day. The bike worked well but I thought it would have more luggage space. I guess $100-$150 would be a very reasonable price 13 years later. I am not a big BMW fan so would prefer a V-Strom 650 or 1000. I got great service from the place I rented from and the whole trip was easy and enjoyable.

2009 BMW R1200 RTSE, BMW Motorcycle Rental NZ, Motorbike Rentals New Zealand

could I ask how long you hired it for?

We hired it for 3 weeks. We hired in Auckland.

NZEnduro

I'm just back in N Ireland after completing 8145km in South then North Islands.
I hired a Suzuki DR650 complete with hard luggage and it ran faultlessly.
I liked the DR as it is light and nimble enough for the fantastic twisties and the superb, long gravel sections. Left it back with a shot back tyre and an Wooden Butt!
I rented from Hakan at NZEnduro in Christchurch and left it back to Auckland.
I could not recommend them highly enough. And they are reasonably priced.

I have had several friends who have hired from these guys: New Zealand Motorcycle Tours, Rentals and Hire NZ - Rental Motorbikes
and have been very happy.
They are nothing to do with me and YMMV.

I have not heard from anyone personally that has been unhappy with anyone that they have hired from in NZ. Any vehicle for hire in NZ has to be certified to a higher standard than private vehicles.

I am slotted in to visit NZ end of this year. My family will be driving and I was thinking of renting a bike, a Yam XT and the likes.

I was wondering, do we have any sort of biker-to-biker rental? This could keep the holiday cost down and I wont mind renting my bike in Malaysia out for less than the commercial rental...a kind of swap-a-bike basis or member-rent-from-member kinda. Of course, the owner has the right of refusal, if he smelt a sense of irresponsibility from the prospective borrower.
Is this feasible at all? Thanks.

Hi Joko.
Check out the bike swap section here:
Bike Swap or Rent - The HUBB

Also recommended is:

Welcome to Trans-Atlantic BikeShare (www.bikeshareworld.com)

Failing that it's possible that I can help out with a sell-and-buy-back.

Cheers bloke

I can highly recommend Paradise Tours based in Auckland. We hired three 2015 BMW 1200GS's in Auckland and returned in Christchurch. Mike Rose, Trevor Stafford in Auckland and Wayne Searle in Christchurch were most helpful. The bikes were booked in September and we spent 18 days on them in January 2016.

Try BikeroundNZ. I'm currently renting from BikeroundOZ, a DR650 for 90 days, will be heading to NZ they don't have the DR their so will try a KLR. Less than $100 a day.

Depending on time , you can buy then sell
take a look at Buy online and sell with NZ's #1 auction & classifieds site | Trade Me
a kiwi adds website, could be cheaper if you're there for a month or so
