Best maps

I am looking to travel Southern Australia Nov 2018 to March 2019. Who has the best maps for moto travel there? I'm looking to ride back roads and stay off of major highways. Dirt roads, mountain passes, etc are fine but not looking to ride difficult off road terrain.

My preference is HEMA Maps. They do a GPS unit pre loaded with all roads and tracks in Australia - well nearly all.

My advice is to do a Google search "Compare Australia's size to........" insert your continent or country and you'll get a far better idea of the size of Australia and how difficult it is to buy a set of suitably scaled maps that show back roads. You'd need a trailer to carry 1:25000 of the whole of Southern Australia, and you'd be across most of the maps in about 10 minutes.

Location SA Viewer provides online topographic maps which are pretty good - whilst you have Internet coverage. The other States must do something similar.

Be warned - weather is damned hot inland at that time of year and using remote roads on a bike, on your own is not the safest thing to do.

Maps - HEMMA. https://www.hemamaps.com/ They do a motorcycle atlas that fits in a tank bage, is of suitable scale to shows the main tracks (but not detail) fuel stops where needed etc https://shop.hemamaps.com/10000029-9...-200-top-rides

Weather - Hot.

Take water! A few people die in the outback due to lack of water every year! A gallon a day is good.

+1 for the Hema maps. You can buy their all-inclusive app, paper maps individual or use Avenza to view PDF versions. Avenza is cheapest if you only need a few and you can also buy other brands and state/geological survey maps in the app. That's what I use.

Best Maps

Everyone thanks for the info. I will investigate the options. I said Southern Australia but I plan to stay mostly near the coast. I won't be going deep into the outback.

A little late to the conversation but if you have an iPhone or iPad Hema has an excellent app (may also be on Android-not sure). Costs around $99 (a bit expensive) but I use it for my work in the Pilbara and Kimberly and in my 4x4 and bike when out exploring on my days off. You can load many different types of maps (and satellite photos) from the Hema store and create your own tracks and waypoints as you find new places.

As above, go with the Hema app. $99 and you can share it on a couple of devices

I wish I'd bought it ages ago

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
