South Island Adventure,Burt Munro & Back

2009 Burt Munro Challenge is 27-29 November. The plan is to build a bike, (some wheels in motion...) ride it to the event (starting in Wellington Friday 20th) via a somewhat adventuresome route, have a ride in the event (I'm thinking the beach race...) and head back to the little smoke for work on Monday, December 7. Anyone else game?

Tell us more about this Burt Monro Challenge please.

Sounds like fun! Would consider to go there as well. Just wave if you're passing Christchurch and I'll join you with the DRZ.

Found that link at the net btw:

Burt was the kiwi of "The Worlds Fastest Indian" fame, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins on the big screen a couple or three years ago now. A great movie if you haven't seen it with something in it for everyone (not just motorcyclists) Anyway, Burt's hometown of Invercargil do an annual event in the great man's honour that starts with beach races and includes track racing, speedway, street races, a toy run and motorcycle rally. If you can make it to New Zealand it would make sense to get the timing right for this. See thorstenc link for more info

Hi Thorsten,

Will probably hit Christchurch at some stage, haven't decided on the route yet, although I do have some points of interest I need to make as part of another challenge British Spares - Classic motorcycle parts for Triumph, Norton, BSA, worldwide.. The bike I'm building will be a medium/large capacity adventure bike so maybe one of your other bikes might be more suitable.

Yes, I've seen the movie and loved it.
Was just wondering if there are speed races ect.
Sound like a good event to attend.

I'll be there...

I'll be there...
Travelling from Auck to Wgtn....across the ditch and then on to Invercargill. Accomodation all booked and all I need to do is pack and leave.
Would love to meet up with people on the way and group ride down.

Still some way to go and a little organising

Cheers

Hell yeah, it's an orgy of 2 wheeled motorsport; beach racing, street racing, speedway & road circuit racing. Gotta get down for it sometime, November always turns out to be a busy month for me, maybe next year.

Cheers
Clint

Acommodations?

If all works out, I will be leaving Christchurch for Burt Monro
sometime around November 24-25th. Would not mind meeting up for a beer in Christchurch or on the way.

I will be renting a bike. I was hoping to play the acommodations by ear, and just stop by a B&B or a motel as I go.

NOW - is that a good idea that time of the year, in that location, given the Challenge is on etc... I was not planning on bringing camping gear unless absolutely have to. What is the word?

clintnz 12 Aug 2009 23:45

I would book something soon for the days of the Burt Rally, as everything close will be busy. For the trip to & from there would be no need to worry.

Our usual strategy when touring down there is to consult the map & accom guide around lunchtime & call ahead to reserve something for the night.

Cheers
Clint

Sounds good Clint, thanks!
That's the conclusion I came to. I've already booked
a couple of nights at a B&B in Invercargill, and will
play the rest by ear, depending on the weather etc.

Other Rallies Around the Munro

Hello
For anyone else following the Bert Munro Rally with more time , theres the Mad Magpie Rally the weekend before around Winchester ( 21st-23rd Nov 09)and the following weekend there was a Rally called the Long Drop Rally also around the same area (4th-6th Dec 09) .
If three Three Rallies in a row appeals to you and a good dose of Kiwi biker Rally experience . There plenty of Otago roads to fill in between weekends.

All times are GMT +1. The time now is 06:59.
