Selling a car inb Australia

I know we are not motorcyclist but having overlanded through Africa and the Americas and have heard a great deal about this site thought we would see if you can help us with our problem

In 2015 we are driving, in our 7 year old UK registered Toyota Hilux, to Oz .
We want to sell it there, but cannot find out any information. We know about the Carnet de passage and that we will have to pay import duty but that is it
Any information would be greatly appreciated

Its not possible to sell a vehicle in Oz that arrives on a carnet. If you do a weblookup for VSB10 you'll get all the info you need.

Apart for the importation problem/cost.

You also have the 'road legal' problem .. the vehicle must meet Australian Design Rules (ADRs) in order for it to be 'registered' for road use .. unless you have it 'wrecked' for parts (broken down and sold in parts). (Or it is very old .. umm 25 years IIRC)

For a motorcycle .. the minimum costs appear to be above $2,000 ... think a car will be around the same. Speedo in km/h, brakes, emissions, crash protection, headlights dip to the left ... etc etc...

--------------------
An alternative ...? Don't pay for the shipping to OZ, leave it in the last place .. and sell it there? Then buy something in OZ if you want. The kiwis had a more liberal scheme ... so that might be an alternative? Bring it to OZ on the carnet .. them ship it to NZ and pay import charges there and sell there ... Any kiwi comments?

Much easier in NZ. A Hilux should meet the requirements to be road legal here, you'll need to get it inspected & VIN'ed (~$400) & pay customs the 15% GST. Make sure it's real clean. Check out the NZ customs & LTNZ websites for more info.

Lots of fun to be had 4wding around NZ too!

Cheers
Clint
