Riding buddies for Great Ocean Rd
 

Hi Im hiring a bike and riding along Great Ocean Rd, Grampian Mts for 1 week if any locals or fellow travellers would like to join me for a day or two. Departing Melbourne on 6th/7th December?

You will not be sorry!
 

This road is a cracker road, tight corners, and the last time was there in '03 the speed limit was a generous 100kmh. What more could a biker want, beautiful scenery amd quality black top. A little dangerous if you make a mistake though, on one side it is mostly a vertical drop to the ocean, on the other a sheer rock wall. It's a shame I am too far North to join you for the ride.

03 might have been 100 kph, but it's now 80 kph. Very frustrating believe me when you know the road as well as I ( I was born in Apollo Bay and grew up there, learning to ride on the GOR ) Mind, on a weekend you can't really safely exceed this speed due to chronic traffic. So do yourself a favour and get a move on nice and early so as to avoid the dozy drivers and caravans and try to avoid the weekend at all costs. Do drop into the Rookery Nook pub at Wye River. Give the main tourist towns just a cursory glance. Once past Apollo Bay the traffic falls away and the road changes character from tight twistys to fast "sweepers". Worthwhile diversions are down to the lighthouse at Cape Otway. Up the Skenes creek rd towards Colac and back again once reaching Forrest or head towards Deans Marsh, then pick up the Lorne rd, thus completing a circuit and then continue west on the GOR. Take a look at the Otway Fly If walking around the tree tops is you thing ( Just out of Lavers Hill ). Which ever way you do it you will enjoy as long as you follow my initial advice about traffic conditions.

Someone once told me that if he was riding the GOR without an Australian licence he wouldn't be overly concerned about speed limits outside 60 zones. (within reason, of course)

Thanks Graeme for places of interest on route have been pinpointing them on map! Will also check out sharing link-thnaks redbull ( do you drink it on its own or mix it with vodka!)

The point made about speedlimits now being down to 80kph. As im on an International driving license is it going to affect me and are there cameras along the route and if I get snapped will bikehire be liable or me?! Even though you say there are many twisties 80kph does seem very slowwww. :confused1:

I live in Torquay and the Great Ocean Road has lost some of its appeal since the 80kph speed limit. Watch for sneaky police LandCruiser parked on the Torquay side of Lorne, and the black unmarked Falcon sedan which cruises consistently between Lorne and Torquay. After you've left Lorne you can relax a little more. The road inland from Lorne to Dean's Marsh is worth a run, as is the road inland a few k's on the Lorne side of Apollo Bay.
But there's still fun to be had if you're on the road early in the morning, preferably mid-week.
