Registering Tasmania bike in Victoria

I've been offered a '95 DR650R for decent money, trouble is it's in Tasmania and I'll be living in Victoria. Now the person I'm dealing with can get the bike to Melbourne no probs, what I'm unsure of is registering the bike to me as its own rego has run out so the bike will have to be newly registered to me.

Does anyone have a rough idea of costs to transfer from Taz to Vic and get it in my name, does it also need an MOT/roadworthyness inspection? I'm not sure if it's a lot of hassle though.

Check this link out to Vicroad's, they handle all registrations in Victoria. This link lists the costings -

Registration fees : VicRoads

You will need a Roadworthy certificate (like a MOT), I'm not sure of the cost for a bike. But most bike shops in Melbourne have a licence to give you a roadworthy certificate, I'd recommend Mick Hone Motorcycles (Mick Hone Motorcycles) thats where I bought my DR, they love 'em!

Um, yeah, you may need an Aussie licence to register a vehicle in Victoria too....not sure, but somewhere in the Vicroads website will be the answer! Or email them.

Good luck!

you do not need a license to register the bike... but you will need a confirmable address.

As for cost yearly reg in Vic costs about $350-400 AUD (may have gone up in the last year though) but this includes your 3rd party insurance and you are not legally required to get any more then this. Stamp duty is about 10% of cost (I think it). the deed transfer and license plate fees are about 30 bucks each. I cant not recall any other fees (but i would not be surprised if they exist but those are the biggies). Then there is also the road worthy. Which by the way they are VERY strict on and you have to get everything they find fixed before you can register it (this can get exxy and on a bike unseen sounds scary to me). If the bike as been off the road for a while it has to get a goverment inspection too.. which is exxy as well ...

Good luck with it mate.

Registering Tasmania bike in Victoria

To clarify a few points, first get a receipt and make sure you are dealing with the owner,a roadworthy will cost $60 to $80 main things are all lights must work, mud flap, chainguard, dot approved tyres and not noisy, then take it to a Vic Roads Branch ,appointment first, they will check it again if OK costs are around $550 pa,$8 per $200 transfer fee, number plate $25 so looks like around a grand allowing for RWC bits and pieces,BTW if you get it RWC at a bike shop as previously suggested good idea, then you will have a great bike, hope this helps Neville :scooter:
