Register and insure an imported bike in Victoria

Has anyone registered an imported bike with Vicroads recently? I have recently imported a bike after going through the import approval process and had a roadworthy certificate done, but now Vicroads tell me I need get a VASS Approval Certificate? The closest engineer to get this is 400km from where I live! So apart from having to spend a day riding down to Bendigo, in freezing conditions, I'll have to part with $400 as well.
I'm just not sure this is the way to go, and I'd like a second opinion if there is one out there!

Another point is, who could I contact regards insurance for an import. Are there any specific companies that I should target, or does anyone have any info. on this subject?

seems like it's Australia - the land of red tape....

Hello gary

Yes I can understand your frustration mate. I have imported 2 bikes one through BMW in '93 and the other myself in 2000. Just to let you know one thing I WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!

I brought mine into QLD and still had the same kind of trouble I had to get a vin number which I had to send to Vic for as this is the only place in Oz that does them. I don't know if this is red tape or there is a little corruption in this country of ours here?? I am beginning to believe the later!

I am sorry that I can't help you but I know what your going through. I just wish somebody from the traffic department would read this site sometimes and see what people go through.

Cheers mate

Hi Gary

I registered a German bike here in Nov 04, and most of my hassles were with Vicrds!!
Too long to go into here, after getting the VIN, had the bike checked by a guy in the east of Melbourne, no problem, just hand over $150, did the RWC and then another check by Vicrds.
My advice, dont believe anything they tell you at Vicrds. For decent info, ring Niddrie, where you have to get the VIN number, they were great!

Thanks for the info.

I managed to get it registered but just had to get an engineer to give the ok. Unfortunately the closest one to me was over 300km away in Bendigo but it was a good day to ride out there and back before dark!

VIC Roads have a approved signatories list that they use to verify imported vehicles. Not all of them look at bikes though, so you need to find one that does. The list is on their website and is updated about every 6 months I think, check out the VASS section under the vehicles section within registration:

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/

I'd still appreciate to hear from anyone regards insurance companies worth contacting.

Thanks again

Gary,

I use Western QBE, dont know if they are any good, but they gave a reasonable quote of $260 fully comp for my XT. Im in the city, so you will probably get a better rate!
