railway line west oz 2 south oz !
 

hi all has anybody ridden from western australia to south australia next to the railway line that crosses the nullarbor , i am going to be crossing the nullarbor in jan i have crossed it on the road several times but as i would rather be of road than on any information would be of interest plus any interested riders that may want to join me get in touch cheers freddo

It is a slow trip. Most of the nullabour has limstone rocks every 0.5 metres sticking up in a random pattern that you have to dodge - other wise you rip the tyres up. Think 20 to 30 km/h.
Petrol at Forest and Kinggona (now I belive). The fibe optic line offeres some relief from teh twist and turns of the railway line. And that is it for the middle.

Jan will be hot. These is not much firewood out there. And less water! In Jan I'd stick to the tar for safety, or wait till March.

hi frank thanks for the reply is it a service track that runs near the railway line or do you just make your own way through the scrub , and would you say the track is worse than say the tanami or the old gunbarrel if you have been out on some of these tracks , just trying to get some idea as to how rough it actually is what some people consider hard others might not , i would be riding a loaded ttr 600 once again thanks for taking the time to reply cheers freddo

Hi freddy i would recomend any outback travel to be done in winter time because the temperatures are very high.
I,m shipping out to oz in may-june 06 to travel the outback if you,re interested.

hi shortie point taken, i have spent a lot of time travelling in oz and you are definately right about the tempreatures, i am hoping to cross the simpson desert in the winter ,keep your eyes open for a ttr600 laters freddo

The gunbarrel and the tananmi are places where your average speed is 60 to 80 km/h. The best track you can find near the railway line (varies from seervice road to optic fiber line etc) will have you down to 20 km/h simply to weave around the 100 mm rocks embeaded in the road surface. The fiber optic line can let you have spededs up to 100 km/h... be caregfull when the service track crosses though!

You say "i am going to be crossing the nullarbor in jan" in your first post yet "i am hoping to cross the simpson desert in the winter" in your second post. The simpsone desert would take 1 week (usually less) so do the nullarbor near winter too!

hi there frank i was looking at riding across the service track next to the railway line in jan as i will be finishing work in western australia in jan and from there i am going to south australia and victoria where i have friends and i can wait up a while , then head up to the simpson its just a case of trying to fit it all in the time i have got i may have to go back to w.a in april so i may leave the railway track till then ,thanks again frank for replies cheers freddy

i am interested in doing the strezelecki track from tiboobaraa ato lyndhurst and up to birdsville. but will wait till its june. i will ride up to see the finke desrt race as well.my frnd on a klr650b will accompany me on the 3aj.if anys intesrested lets keep in touch and plan fer it.is june a goodtime frank?

June. Winter in the desert. It will be ruddy cold at night. And the days will be short on sunlight. Take port. Fritz (the SA stuff). And cheeze.

Junes one of the better times - Perhaps you blokes contemplating the travel of the outback may want to check in with the groups doing the OCR towards Gascoyne Junction in August - close to the Kimberly and Bungle Bungles region - much more to see than the Nullabor ....
