Outback Australia

I am planning a trip along the Oodnadatta track in South Australia and would like some information about the condition of the road. The only comments I have found so far relate only to 4 wheel drive cars. I'd like to know whether I should expect Bull-dust and/or corrugations. and what is the best way to ride through these ?

I've heard of guys doing it on road bikes so it cant be that bad - of course the bike will be shaken to bits and dont consider doing it in summer. On a trail bike with knobblies it will be a gas - there are plenty of other good tracks in the area too - I covered them in the Rough Guide plus in AMH - also the LP Outback is a great book - but car oriented.

Richard,

I live in Alice Springs and travelled on the
Oodnadatta track last weekend. The track has
recently been graded after the heavy rains
earlier in the year. The track is in very
good condition.

I agree with Geoff, I rode it recently with another Andy on another black 96 R1100GS and averaged 120kmh all the way to Wiliiam Creek. I rode alone onto Coober Pedy from there, and although some of that stretch is quite sandy it was very doable on pretty much anything. The Oodnadatta was one of the best dirt roads to ride because there was nearly zero traffic and no practical speed limit due to conditions - perfect for the big gs!
Have fun

Rode the track starting from Coober Pedy.(feb 2000) The road was open when we started but had been closed for awhile before traveled it due to rain. We encountered numerous large water puddles that were able to ride through or around. (KLR650's) Recent automobile tracks indicated that earlier travelers were having a difficult time. It looked to me that the road gets closed if conditions require it.. Ask around town in Coober Pedy for "the little German resturant"(cant remember its name). Go to the little bookstore attached and ask about road conditions. The owner has a mail route friend who travels the road frequently. Have fun. The owner of the pub at William Creek has a website. Do a search for William Creek. Let me know if you need help.
