Moving to Sydney

Hello all,
I was surfing the net to know more about motorcycling in Australia and got into this page. I have read the problems of a lot of people trying to send the bike to Australia. I have found a lot of problems to take my VFR 800 (just one year old) to Sydney. I am leaving Madrid (Spain) in two weeks and plan to stay in Australia for at least a year. Well, besides the price, insurance, time, etc, etc, there is no warranty that the motorcycle will make it in one piece and on time. So I have decided to sell it, (even though just thinking about it hurts!) and buy one over there. I think pricewise it is cheaper to buy a motorcycle there than here in Spain. However, there are some things that I would like to know so if anyone could help....I would appreciate it, thanks!
I would like to know how expensive insurance is, let's say for the same model, Honda vfr 800. What about leather jackets, pants, boots, helmets,..... And I am sure there will be really nice riding spots over there. Can anyone tell me which ones are in the Sydney area?
Thank you all.
Luis

Hi Luis, and welcome!

I have moved your post to the Australia forum, as it really isn't about Trip Transport.

Since you are new to the site, you might not be aware that there are 172 Horizons Unlimited motorcycle traveller communities in 58 countries, including one in Sydney. I suggest you also contact the Sydney community with your questions.

Good luck with your move.

Hope this info is not too late for you.
If you want to contact the Honda Riders Club I am sure that they could answer all your questions. They are based, that is, head office, in Melbourne but there are a lot of rides from Sydney and it is an Australia wide club.

If you are over 40 years old the Ulysses club could be of help to you. They are Australia wide and they have groups that go on regular rides. There is a mixture of types and brands of bikes in this club and it has a huge (by Australian standards) membership.

We shipped our 2 bikes from Malaysia to Sydney back in 2000. Paid US$450 for crating, fumigating, transport to the dock, and all freight charges to Sydney harbour. Then we paid about another US$400 to get the bikes from the ship into our hands -- We later learned that Sydney is one of the most expensive ports in the world!

There is an abundance of used bikes available in Australia, for very good prices -- they could even be cheaper then in Spain! 3rd party liability insurance is about A$100/yr, and you can find many top brands of m/c gear at the bigger bike shops for very fair prices (especially compared to the Euro).

Basically, no worries mate! Have fun and be sure to contact the clubs mentioned above -- the Ulysses will help you even if you are under 40.
