Motorcycle rental in Malbourne area (advise needed)

I`m planning a trip around South-East Australia, starting and ending in Melbourne (19.10-8.11) and looking for a motorcycle. I would need a travel enduro class bike for me and my girlfriend as a pillion. I talked to several rentals but its quite tough to find something reasonable, i.e.
1. Biketours -> have for me only BMW1150 but they don`t allow to go off tarmac http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/eekers.gif
2. Aussierider -> terrible expensive travel enduro bikes, no info on the insurance cover
3. Garnersmotorcycyles -> I almost decided to take Yamacha ST 1200 , but the insurance excess is $5000 and there is no theft cover on any of their motorcycleshttp://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/eekers.gif.

None of those have cheaper bikes such as V-strom, Transalp, etc.

Can anybody elaborate a bit on the motorcycle insurance in a Australia ? Is such high excess and no theft protection a common practice ? I`m really confused and stuck in my search for a bike http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/bncry.gif

I went also through bikesales www site but there is not so much reasonable offers for me in Melbourne area.

I would also accept a bike swap - KTM 990 Adv available in Warsaw Poland.

Can anyone help ?

Hi Sikor, I'm in Melbourne. Yes, insurance excess on any rental bike is high, especially for overseas visitors because most visitors are used to driving on the right and have a high number of accidents when forget to drive on the left here.

Insurance in gerneral is not cheap - even if I take a demo bike out from a dealer I normally have to agree to an excess of $3,000+.

I have seen your questions on ADV. The answers you have received there are the correct ones and sadly, you will not receive any different ones here.

The only other place I know that rents bikes in Melbourne is Clipstone Yamaha Hire Bikes - still not really cheap though and probaly not the sort of bikes you have in mind.

The cheapest alternative is definitely to buy and sell locally.

farqhuar: Thanks for replay, just looking for advise anywhere. Hire bikes unfrtunatelly has not that type of bikes I need. Will consider buying and selling but this would be a challenge as my time will be limited and will not be able to thoroughly check condition of the bike :(

I've read some good reports about these guys: Bike-Round-Oz

They offer a range of rental bikes, including enduro types. Their General Terms & Conditions seem to indicate that you can travel and ride on remote gravel roads/tracks .. BUT this comes with significant caveats [i.e. "You Have Been WARNED!" etc.]

Good luck. Aus is a great country, you'll luv it .. :mchappy:

Cheers

Well, they advertise that there is a depot in VIC [Melbourne]: LINKY

"LOCATIONS...

.. The main [VIC] depot is just north of the [Melbourne] city centre - 10 minutes in a taxi."

Garner's seem good guys, have a very wide range of bikes available including BMW GSs, V-Stroms etc. They once bought a Tiger955 from me but I think they have since sold it. They are 10 minutes walk from the centre of the city.

Website here: Garners Hire Bikes - Australia

Note that hiring bike in Australia will never be cheap due in part to tax, Government charges and compulsory insurance.

I toured OZ. this year in march and april, i hired a new YAM TENERE 650 with full metal luggage from Garners and had no problems, i found Trevor very helpfull and covered a lot of miles including plenty of gravel. I was aware that if i bent it i would lose chunk of money from my bond so you have to ride accordingly. I was on my own and Oz is a great place and made a lot of friends on the way. WARNING, i bent a front brake lever and they tried to charge 100 dollars, i said no way and paid 25 so stand your ground, enjoy the trip and stay off the hiways you,ll die of boredom with a speed limit that everyone sticks to. If you can get a V.STROM go for it , iv,e just toured USA on mine , great bike.
