Long term Carnet for Australia and then back to UK

I'm going to Oz next year to work but had thought I could not temporarily import my bike for more than a year (will be on a long stay business visa, not the full immigration one). I'm planning on working for a couple of years then doing the ride back to the UK so had thought I might need to buy another bike while there.

Now if I did ship my bike over there, can I just get a Carnet and keep renewing it? (sorry if this info is elsewhere) I will contact the RAC also but am interested if anyone else has had experience of this.

Cheers

Yes, you can just renew it.

I decided that it would be better for me to pay once to arrange it, then just roll it on every year for the standard application fee. The only downside is that the bank guarentee will remain frozen for the duration. I spoke to the RAC about it and they have no issue.

Ok, so if I had my bike in Oz for 2 years on a carnet that would be fine?

Then for the say 9month trip back to the UK via India etc, I could just extend it again?

I know the Carnet costs a bit, if my bike is worth about £2,000, what would be the most cost effective method of getting a Carnet and extending it? ie Bank Guarantee (I own my flat) or Insurance?

Hi Mike – I’m a Brit too and live in the UK, but I nevertheless have a Honda XL650V TransAlp in temporary storage in New Zealand.

My aim is to get back down to NZ in early (Jan/Feb) 2009 and ship the T/A across the Ditch to Australia and take a good ride around and through the centre. To see all I would like to see down there might take two extended - 3-month - visits over say a 12-18 month period. I shall return to England in between rides.

The upshot is that I’ll need an Aussie Carnet too, quite likely for more than a year (plus others – see below). So we have some common ground in this respect. Moreover, and with even more common ground in mind, I also wan to ride back to the UK via Asia, the sub-Continent, the Middle East and Europe.

So keep in touch mate – we might be able to help each other out.

PM or e-mail me if you want, anytime.

Cheers

KEITH

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
