Hi Bryan,
we got our third party insurance with the "Permit to Drive an Unregistered Motor Vehicle as Overseas Visitor". It's simply called "pink slip". The price for the pink slip and insurance was about 90AUD.

Hope that helps

Bryan:

I had no problem getting the third party insurance in Australia, After getting the compulsory mechanical check done (every year in New South Wales, I've heard first time only in Queensland)I was able to purchase it from the garage that did the inspection. The only problem being that I needed an adress for it and for the Registration and licence plates (I was able to use a friends adress) The problem came when I wanted Public Damage insurance and Comprehensive Insurance (fire, theft, repair damage to my bike) no one wanted to give it to me unless I had an Australian bike licence. When I checked with NRMA (New South Wales Regional Motor Association) the equivilent of CMA (Canadian Motor Association) of which I am a member, I found out they have reciprical agreements and they gave me insurance over the phone, with the provision if I had an accident they would check with CMA and if I had not been truthful the insurance would be null and void. I felt that because I was driving on the "other" side of the road and I might do something stupid it would be good to have. The price was fairly high Aprox $800.00 AUS per year, but they had a monthly deduction plan on credit card that cut it down to $75.00 AUS per month, to me well worth it. A phone call when you are finished cancels it. You didn't say where you were from but if you are looking for the additional insurance it would be a good idea to check with your local motoring association to see if they have a reciprocal agreement and possibly join if you aren't already a member. You can also pick up free maps from the Motor Associations down under which is handy and saves a few dollars. Good luck and ride safe.

Hi Brian,
In NZ it is more easy to get your motorbike insured. I had following insurance company but after reading some prices on this site also about same company I definitly paied too much so negociating is necessary :
John Baker Insurance Broker
33-37 East Tamaki Rd.
Hunters Corner
Paptoetoe Auckland
tel. 09/ 278 62 64
fax. 09/ 278 53 02
I payed 300 NZ$ for 3 months and another traveller only paied 100 NZ$ for 3 months and 2 motorbikes (if this price was correct off course).

I arrived in Sydney and got my insurance at Kings Cross Car Park Ltd, the insurance company was Lumley General Ltd., Lumley house, Level 9, 309 Kent Street, Sydney NSW, tel 02/9248 1111, fax 02/9248 1122 and I paied 175 AU$ for 4 months.

In OZ

hi just thought this might be of interest for anyone looking for insurance in oz. I`m here for a year and call a few places, most didn`t want to know if your english but "Arista" (1800 649 797) said if you`ve got a licence to ride legally in oz then its ok. they were also nearly half as much as anyone else! for an idea of price i`m 29 clean licence no accidents but no noclaims(they will consider uk no cliams) riding a 1998 klr 650 valued at$3900. they charged $420 which was 175 gbp with $300excess fully comp. you get agreed value here as well.some thing i didn`t realise is you have to pay to register the bike, the seller put the value of the bike down as $2000 i had to pay $43 as a percentage of that + $40. hope this is of use
