Importing bike US-NZ, Registering then RTW. Problems?
 

Hi all

At the moment i have a Californian registered DR650 which i have ridden across the states and down here to mexico city. I am thinking of shipping it home (NZ) and registering it there and preparing for a big trip NZ-EURO and who knows where over 1-2 years.

Anyone know if it is possible to renew registration while out of the country? my understanding is that you need a WOF to get a rego? which would not be possible if you are not there.

Another possibilty is keeping it registered in the US but then as a NZ resident i cannot temp import to nz.

any ideas or help appreciated

The bike will have to be in NZ to have VIN inspection etc to get it regged, WOF comes after that.

Depending on how long you have owned the DR and used it overseas you may not have to cough up at customs. Worst comes to worst you may be up for GST on the value of the bike...less than NZ$1,000?

I,d be asking what wether a expired NZ bike Rego would mean anything to any customs person overseas.

Maybe one after a bribe or tired of overlander bikers who wants too look closely.

Also a carnet as I understand it is for a year only , at first.
A WOF also is required before a rego.
If you choose to bring your bike back try to having a Recepit lowering the value of the bike.
GST is based on the purchase value.
Rules have also changed more recently making things easier.

Last bike I bought back they wanted orginal factory brake lines and the disc thickness to be within factory standards. Only thing they were interested in when going for a Vin. And headlight glass.

Or else the shop wanted to draw more money out of me

There is provision in the regulations for this. If you are shipping out of the country you can tell LTNZ and they will flag the bike as not needing a WOF and let you renew your rego. All you need is someone to post the sticker to you.

Thanks for the info i think this is what i´ll do let me know i you have any better ideas.

my plan is to ship the bike back and register it in NZ but keep the US rego..when i eventually leave NZ swap to the US plates and put the NZ rego on hold.

yes it is possible to use the NZ one and renew like nigel says.

From what i am told to get a carnet in NZ you must put the full bond down, there is no paying some sort of insurance against it (anyone know otherwise)

so....

i will use the US plates a can get a carnet by paying just the insurance against it. and also the US rego is 80 a year so alot cheaper

do you have a carnet for the bike ???
wouldnt this solve the problems your worried about ???
registration , tax , import , export . isnt that the purpose of a carnet??

if you a are a visitor/tourist yes it would, bieng a NZ resident it is not possible, i must import/register the bike in NZ. (as far as i know)

ahh gotcha , have you tried the AA , LTNZ ?
