Can a non-resident perm-import car to Oz...Help

My car is under a Carnet and I will be shipping it to Australia in a few months once we arrive to India. I will only be in Oz for 2 months then go back to work. I don’t want the car to be under the Carnet while I am not in Australia in case something happens and I end up forfeiting the bond.
Is it possible for me a non-resident to permanently import the car into Australia? If not, any suggestion for me. Surly some other people didn’t want to go to the expense like me of shipping the car home

Hi Liam!

I don't know if you as a non resident can import the car but if you think about that DO NOT enter the country on the carnet!!! You have to do all the paperwork for the import BEFORE the vehicle enters the country!!

Good luck!! Werner

Liam - I think the short answer to your question is, "No" .. "it's not possible".

There's quite a bit of advice on this subject within the HUBB forums; suggest you do a thorough search. Also check-out the published rules, but I recommend that you don't rely on them, as they might not be up-to-date and reflect the true position.

There's also some decent advice on offer from the Aussie AA, click on this link for more info.

Good luck. If you do manage to get your vehicle into Oz under cover of anything other than a carnet, then please let us know.

Good luck

KEITH

The only way for a non resident to bring a car into Aus is via a carnet - the import approval scheme has been scrapped. Carnet's only allow the vehicle to remain in Aus whilst you are there as well. If you leave Aus before the car does, the carnet is forfeit and you will end up paying.

The customs website has all the info needed - weblookup car imports customs Australia.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
