The Great Ocean Road - Places to stay?
 

I am flying to Australian and my cousin and I are planning on motorbiking the "Great Ocean Road" (we're starting the ride in Adelaide) in November and then taking the ferry over to Tassie for a few days. I'd appreciate some suggestions of great value/good food places to stay on the way.

the best value places i have found, are the hostels along the road or camping up in the grampians. there are plenty of free places to camp but they are not normally near the ocean. hostels are in the bigger towns along the great ocean road as this is a really popular internation tourist destination.
they cost around $25 a night. another option is caravan parks. they will let you camp for a small fee. not sure how much? i think around 10 bucks for an unpowered site.

as for food, by far the cheapest option would be to self cater. there are supermarkets in everytown and buying and cooking your own food this way will save you heaps.
when you get to melbourne check out lentil as anything. they are a great vegean resturant where you pay what you think it is worth. you can have an amazing meal and just give a $20 or whatever after.

I'm from Adelaide and when I'm riding to Melbourne, I'm usually on a mission to get to there in two days.

I've found Port Campbell a great place to stay. Caravan Park cabins are comfortable but not cheap. CP also offers tent camping and they have a camp kitchen. There is also a Backpackers in town which is cheap and comfy. You have a few options if you decide on eating out.

Also, a little further off the beaten path is Gellibrand with cabins and tent camping available and a pub at which to eat.

OMG, that sound so fun! I am thinking of doing something like that.

Be sure to have tea at the Warnabool RSL. It overlooks the wetlands and out to the ocean. Fan-bloody-tastic!

Also keep a spare $100.00 in your pocket so that you can jump on a helicopter over the Lochard Gorge. Extravagant yes I know, but you will not regret it.

If you have time to do a loop heading in as well, there are great "C" and "B" road from Mount Elephant to Ballarat, Bendigo. Country Victoria is a great place to ride.
