Cheap Cell Phone in Christchurch?

For how much can I get a cheap cell phone in Christchurch?

Here in the States I can get an unlocked Motorola for about US $50, which is around NZ $70 or so. Can I get something much cheaper than that?

Also, any suggestions as to where to buy cheaply&conveniently a SIM card, somewhere near the center of the town?

Thanks!

You will easily be able to find a cell phone in NZ for that sort of money.
We have 2 main providers - Telecom and Vodaphone and newer minor players (Two Degrees).

My suggestion would be to buy a cheap phone (ask a local when you get here) and get a Two Degrees sim card - their prices are 44c calls and 9c txts on pre-pay. Thats cheaper than the big operators can do.

Good luck

Chch mobile

Our family has just been through a round of mobile buying, so I have up-to-date info. It's bloody hard to find a phone under NZ$80, so my advice is to get something you are happy with and like using before you leave. Then, once in Christchurch, go to Dick Smith Electronics in Manchester St or Columbo St, both in the centre of city. They have Second Degree SIM cards for $2 at present!

Hey Nigel and Howie,

Thanks for the ideas! 2Degrees sounds good, I like the name :-).

I just scored an unlocked Motorola V197 from Amazon.com for $43, so
will be getting me a sim card from Dick Smith Electronics hopefully in November, when I get to Christchurch.

Thanks again guys!
