Buying a bike in NZ and Australia
 

My plan for my next RTW is to go down SE Asia with local bike but I was wondering if any of you bought a bike in NZ or Australia , I have US and French passeport , I will prefer this option vs shipping my bike since I will be doing the two places just before heading to Africa and I will be coming from New Guinea .
Any good advice welcome

This will give you a good idea about the secondhand market.
For rego you need an Australian address, which shouldn't be a big problem, as there are many members here in OZ.

Thanks a lot for the info and the great web for buying a bike , if all I need is an address to buy a bike and insure it , it should be very easy . Price a pretty similar to us too not too bad at all. Do you think I could take it to NZ or I should sale it in the Australia.

I think that all states now require that you have 100 points of ID, if you do a weblookup on Queensland Transport - registering a vehicle, you'll get some info.

You'd better ask the question of the auto club in the state that you have the bike registered about whether they will issue a carnet de passage to a tourist - I have a feeling it could be problematic.

You should also do a weblookup for VSB10 which sets out the conditions of bringing a vehicle back into Australia if thats what you want to do after visiting NZ. You MUST have a carnet - its a right royal pain in the arse.

Just to add to what Roger said. While you do need a Carnet to get a bike back to Australia, you don't need one to bring a bike to New Zealand. You will have to pay the 12.5% GST tax and get it registered (about NZ$600 for inspection fee and registration for six months) but you can get the tax back if you export the bike. Once registered in New Zealand, you can also sell it here.
So it might be a good option to bring it here.

Not sure you have that right, Nigel.

Temporary imports into NZ attract a bond of 15% (same as GST) and the Wof & Rego should come to much less than $600 for 6 months. My clients pay much less than $100 for Wof & 1 month Rego. Well, that was in March, this year - maybe it's changed. Bond money is refunded as soon as the bike leaves NZ.

Ahh yes Dave, where was my head. It's been a while since it was 12.5%!

Regards the rego/WOF cost, I was talking about permanent import, and getting a NZ VIN inspection for leaving the bike here. Also the rego cost has gone up. It's about $700 a year and the VIN/Plate inspection is $180 last time I did it and I'm sure it's gone up. So for 6 months and NZ plate, it'll be close to NZ$600. I'm sure you are right about a short term import costs.

Hi All,

A question on an address for rego in Australia, specifically Queensland. I intend to buy a bike from a dealer in Qld and have been informed that I can supply a hotel or hostel address and this will sort out the registration formalities. Can anyone let me know whether this is right or wrong and if it is wrong how to go about obtaining an address. I hope to pick the bike up on 27 Dec this year and have been asked by the dealer for an address to complete the contract.

The best person to sort this out,is the dealer.
I wouldn't trust a hotel or hostel to look after my mail, a proper business should be more appropriate. Always ask before you sign or pay.

If you want to buy a bike to ride in Oz & NZ then sell when you are finished, starting out in Oz then coming over here is really the ONLY option. It is next to impossible to import a vehicle into Oz & sell it on, but no big deal in NZ.

I got a carnet in NSW for a NSW registered vehicle with a UK passport and licence, so don't think that's a problem.
