Smile Buying a bike inAustralia?
Hi can anyone recomend a bike dealer in Australia, I had intended to ship my bike there but what with shipping cost's the carnet and the customs i have decided that i want to buy a new Suzuki DR650 there, i've been serching through google and have not had to much luck, are there parts of Australia were it is cheeper to buy a bike. so any recomendations please. Thanks Skip

Have a look at the Australian Yellow Pages website and choose a Suziki Dealer in the city that you'll fly into. There is a usenet newsgroup aus.motorcycles with a bunch of helpful people who can probably give you advice on specific dealers.

I'm not aware of major price differences between cities, but freight costs may make Perth a bit more expensive. You can haggle a bit, especially cash sales. You maybe able to get a buyback deal from a large dealer.

Expect to lose about 20% of the new bike's value the moment it leaves the showroom.

Registration and third party injury insurance costs are all within a few dollars for each State. The dealer should be able to organise bike insurance - you can choose third party (damage to someone else's property), plus fire and theft or comprehensive which covers damage you cause to your bike plus any third party property. Its not compulsory to have third party property insurance.

Have a look at Queensland Transport's website on buying a vehicle - good advice and explains the process which might be different to other countries - paying stamp duty, insurance, registration.

Dealer for bike in Sydney
I bought a v-strom from Central Coast Motorcycles in Gosford just north of Sydney. You can take the train from the airport and then a short cab ride. Glad I found your post becuase I told them they were so helpful I would spread the word. They helped set up everything for me. Registration, insurance, tool loan to add my mods and panniers I brought with me. They were great. The salesman likes cigars so bring a few and he will be your bud!

the Suzi 650 costs roughly 7,200 A$ new. Even if you loose 20% on that I reckon it's lots cheaper than importing your bike (as I did) and getting it back home. The 650 enduro is a good deal and copes with any of the dirt tracks you encounter here.

Do a search on bike buyback in australia where you purchase the bike and at the end of your trip the dealer buys it back at a prearranged price. See www.bikescape.com.au

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
