Bringing an Enfield Home from India
 

I am heading to India in a couple of months to do a tour of the Himalayas, Delhi to Leh, and were thinking of bringing a new Enfield back to New Zealand.

Has anyone had any experience at doing this, or know whats involved in getting them road legal this end


Appreciate any info.

You don't say whether you want to ride it out of India(I don't think this is longer possible) or 'Ship' it out(paperwork headache). If riding, I have heard that people purchase in Nepal and ride from there, it therefore makes the Enfield an 'export model', if buying a new FI unit model, get one that also has a kickstart as 'back-up'!

I was wanting to ship it out, , but not sure whats involved etc. The tour we are doing provides bikes

Another big issue could well be, how to get it road-legal and registered in your home country. To bring a bike this way to the EU would certainly be a headache (bikes sold in India most likely do not meet EU specs, making it close to impossible), really don´t know about NZ, but I´m afraid you might face similar issues.

I shipped an Enfield home to Australia last August 2012. Was fairly easy actually, but I have a brand new one C5 classic, which I plan to take to South America. so I am going to sell it if you are interested then you only have to send it from OZ !!!!! (I had it made 500cc)

I purchased a new one a couple of years ago when in New Delhi from Maddan Motors. They arranged the freight, which was cheap as chips until it reached our docks (then they really rip into you with a range of fees, just like the Banks). For OZ it is really important NOT to have it shipped in a wooden crate or the like. Quarantine will not believe any "Fumigation Certificate" from India. Use no wood what-so-ever in the freighting.

Mine was a reconditioned "1965" 500cc so registering it here was very easy. I had the "logbook" from 1965 to support the date of manufacture and the frame numbers and engine number aligned with the logbook. Having said that we have a scheme that allows any vehicle over 25 year of age to get either a 45 or 90 day permit that allows us to use it for not more than that number of days per year. The days need not be consecutive. It is roughly a dollar a day cost. Excellent idea when, like me, you have a number of such vehicles.

The paperwork at this end such as the Import Permit etc is very easy.

Sorry Paul I'm confused, do you now own two enfields or one, and how old was the Enfield you exported from India? Can you give more info on the process?

I own 2 Enfields. The first I bought in Mumbai & it is a completely rebuilt 1983 Royal Enfield. The 2nd one is a 2012 Royal Enfield C5. I would not recommend buying one in India no matter how cheap they are. The materials they use a crap from start to finish !!!!! If you decide to, the process is relatively painless (well was for me) The new ones are fantastic tho if you buy the export version (we had hired a C5 in Nepal & was a new bike as well but was nowhere the quality as the one I bought in OZ !!!) I would actually ride the new Enfield RTW no problem (well the only think that stops me is it is air cooled)

Fern, do you want the women's name & details that I used ? She sold me the bike & at first I was worried obviously but there was no need to be as she did everything for me & cheap to !!! Responded to my questions fast as well, so even if you don't buy one off her she can help. Alternatively I can send you the details of the individual companies involved, but this way you are opening yourself up to be ripped off.

Any info on the procedure, I am going in couple of months to buy C5 and want to ship over with me...
One i know is about the oxygen sensor..lambada anything else anyone has idea on.

G'day All,
I have an RE 2005 Bullet. I purchased it in 2007 just over a year old with from memory 3,300k's on the clock. I paid about AU$4k when they retailed for about AU$10k. You can see it on my blog at builds bonza bike bash | … gone rideabout. They now retail for I think AU$7k, yes the price is now a lot lower, so if not buying new with warranty, compliance, etc, I'd buy one as I did, almost new second hand.

As a member of Home of the Royal Enfield Club of Australia Inc. I've heard some nightmare stories about blokes who bring bikes from India. One very big problem is getting compliance but there other problems. I'm sure the blokes at the club would be your best source of info. For a long time one member had an import bike, new but without compliance for less than AU$2k. He was talking about wrecking it and selling it as parts.

BTW, if you get one dump the electric start motor and use the kick-start, they start first kick every time and a small child could kick it, I have used my hand to start mine.

Oh, have you ridden one? They are gutless wonders and handling is less than average. That doesn't worry me, I ride like a granny but I do suggest you try before you buy.
