Best time to travel around Aus

Hi,
Whats the best time to travel around australia, we are shipping our car next year were hoping to ship around May ish. hoping to spend at least 10 months touring at the start of our RTW trip.

Bit of a warmer before S America.

Also what is the best route for each month ect.

Frank Warner 6 Dec 2006 00:17

May - 10 months heading into winter then out the other side ..

For winter you'd want warm .. that would be north (closest to the equator).

Shipping to SAmerica ..? So cheapest to exit on the east coast .

Starting on the west coast ? Perth ? Go up the west coast, up to Darwin for the centre of the trip, Accross to Queensland, zag back to the centre for Alice Springs, Ayres rock and down to the Flinders Ranges, accros to the bottom east coast, cruise up teh mountains to Sydney and leave from there ?

Frank's suggestions

andyb43,
I agree with Frank Warner's suggested route, he has put in access to a good selection of the logical highlights, He has dealt with the hot summer period well. Being south of Alice Springs by Oct/Nov is a good idea though.

You will be looking at a solid ten months of tripping and around 35-40,000km on the road. Much of Frank's suggestions are through remote areas with available access along good tar roads, there are also many minor roads and tracks that can be taken as alternatives as the desire takes you.

There are lots of beautiful and arid places to go, but a lot of road between them. Amongst other places I have found the south coast of WA impressive.

I agree
Dont miss Kathrine gorge approx 200-300km south of darwin.Try to hit Darwin after the rainy season in Jan (really humid). I am not into the tourist thing but a boat ride down kathrin gorge is worth it. Also if in sydney go see the blue mtns
Good luck

wet season

g'day,

just another tip...keep in mind that from approx nov - april the top end of oz will be experiencing "the wet". daily rain and storms will mean that lots of places are closed due to wash-outs. best time to see this part of oz is may-sept when the weather, while hot is perfect with blue skies every day and cooooooold nights.....believe me it will get cold!! (avoid visiting oct - nov as the humidity may well drive you round the twist!).

hope this helps with the planning!

:)
