Carnet and working holiday visa

Just a quick question

If i was to travel to Australia by bike (using carnet) and go for a working holiday for 1-2 years is it possible to extend the carnet. Im sure i read it was but just wanted to check.

Below is the advise I just got:


Unfortunately, it is not possible to extend a Carnet to 2 years. The alternative is to import the motor bike under S162 of the Customs Act, as a Temporary Resident.

If you go to our Web Site Customs home page , then 'Travellers', then 'Quick Guide to Customs for travellers', then 'Motor Vehicles', and there is a guide to importing a motor vehicles, which includes motorbikes.

Motorbikes are duty free, so there would just be GST to pay, which would be refunded when we receive evidence that you have exported it.

Aehhh...we got the extension for the carnet;-) Our Carnet runs out after 4 month (WHM Visa too) and we asked the customs for the extension. We ordered early the 2 carnet ( German Anschlusscarnet i don't know the wordin english) and we got the stamp in. But we plan to stay for a longer term.... anyone knows the way and the phone nr. to get the bike's through the customs????

We're now in WA maybe in another state or teritory are different rules??? Maybe better for us???

Hmm, not really sure the answer then. Although importing the bike doesnt seem as bad as i thought it would be. I was under the impression it would be an absolute nightmare. Cheers for that link Mike
Either way, its just a plan just now that may or may not take off and im just gathering info.

Customs is Fedral Gov. so those rules don't change state to state.. sorry. Think teh customs people get concerned if you are here for longer than 12 months with a carnet. I know they did for some stuff we had for testing .. teh gear was faulty so needed repair .. that then needed parts .. went over teh 12 months .. all sorts of phone calls, letters .. etc etc .. was here for a further 1 month ..

Think i will be doing the import way now. I definetely plan on staying for 2 year. I plan on doing the WH visa. If i then do 3 months of certain jobs i can then extend for 2 year. Dont want the carnet holding me back.

If i do the import way and if the option was there to stay permanently, is it possible to have the bike permanently imported. I know the carnet would not allow this.

However according to that if i was to import the bike i still would not be able to keep it there longer than 12 months (section 7). My plan is to go on a whv for 12 months then get it extended for another 12. Doesnt look like this is doable.

So Carnet and Importing the bike will both only allow me to have the bike in Australia for 12 months. This puts a damper on my plans

Hi Frank!

We try to get a sponsorship visa. So..we need to import the bike's. We asked allready the customs here in Fremantle. They had no idea.....only "not here".

So you know where we need to ask for that???
